Tigers Sweep Season-Opening Twinbill at Liberty Softball Classic
February 24, 2023 | Softball
Getting a one-hit shutout from Alexis Laudenslager in the opener and contributions all around at the plate in the nightcap, the Princeton softball team swept its season-opening doubleheader Friday at the Liberty Softball Classic in Lynchburg, Va., with a 1-0 win over Elon and a 9-1, six-inning win over Morgan State.
Princeton is scheduled to play two more Saturday as the weekend continues, against Marshall at 2 p.m. and host Liberty at 4 p.m.
Against Elon, Laudenslager allowed just three walks and a third-inning hit, striking out 11 to reach that number for the third time in her career. The reigning Ivy League Pitcher of the Year's career-high 12 Ks came last season against Columbia.
The lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lauren Sablone drew a one-out walk and moved around on a Grace Jackson base hit and a stolen base before scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Ashley McDonald.Â
Against Morgan State, nine Tigers got hits and six drove in runs, with Serena Starks, Allison Ha, Adrienne Chang and Sablone each getting a two-hit game and Ha and Caitlin Bish each driving in two runs.Â
Princeton took the lead with a two-run Ha homer in the first inning. In the fourth, four straight hits started the inning with Jackson driving in a run during that stretch, and sacrifice flies followed from Starks and Sophia Marsalo to push the lead to 5-0.
A four-run sixth pushed the game into run-rule territory, with a hit and two walks setting the table for a Chang base hit and another run that scored on an error to make it 7-1. Bish then had a two-RBI double to make it 9-1, and after Meghan Harrington, in relief of starter Molly Chambers, set Morgan State down with just a walk in the bottom half of the inning, Princeton had its six-inning win. Chambers went 4 1/3 to get the win, allowing a run on two hits and a walk, striking out five, while Harrington went a shutout inning and two-thirds, allowing a walk and striking out one.
