February 26, 2023 | Softball
The opponents took both games from the Princeton softball team Saturday at the Liberty Softball Classic in Lynchburg, Va., with Marshall getting a 10-2, six-inning win and host Liberty winning 5-4 in eight innings.
Against Marshall, Princeton saw the Thundering Herd score in each of its first four at-bats on the way to a 9-2 lead. Princeton got its first run in the second inning when Grace Jackson, who reached on a base hit, scored on a throwing error, and the Tigers added another in the third when Ashley McDonald, who reached on a leadoff walk, also came home on a throwing error.
Serena Starks, Allison Ha, Adrienne Chang and Jackson split Princeton's four hits against Marshall.
Against Liberty, Princeton got out to a 3-0 lead in the third innings when a hit batter, two walks and two errors added up to the three runs. Liberty answered with three in the bottom of the fifth, and the score stayed tied at 3-3 into an extra inning. Julia Dumais doubled home Starks, the tiebreaker runner placed at second base, to give Princeton a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth, but two walks and two hits in the bottom of the eighth allowed Liberty to get the walkoff win.Â
Alexis Laudenslager went the distance in the circle for Princeton in the nightcap, striking out a career-high 13 to surpass her previous best of 12, set last season against Columbia.
Princeton will close out its play in the Liberty Softball Classic with a game against Northern Illinois set for 10 a.m., one hour later than originally scheduled.
