Hyland Stops Career-High 43 Shots, But Colgate Holds On for Series Win
February 26, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Rookie netminder Taylor Hyland made a career-high 43 saves, but No. 3-ranked Colgate held on for a 2-1 win over the Princeton women's hockey team Sunday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. to rally back from a series-opening loss and take the best-of-three ECAC Hockey quarterfinals two games to one in a series that saw each of the three games decided by one goal.
Hyland played in all three games of the series and stopped 99 shots over 176:17 in net. Her previous career best came early in the season against Yale, which will host the ECAC semifinals next weekend, in a Nov. 5 game that saw Hyland make 41 saves. Despite three of the four quarterfinal series going the distance, all four home teams advanced, with Yale set to host Clarkson and with Colgate and Quinnipiac playing in the other semifinal.
Sarah Fillier staked Princeton to an early lead just more than six minutes into the game on a play that began with a Hyland save, Stef Wallace clearing in Princeton's defensive zone to Maggie Connors, and Connors dishing back to Fillier in the slot for the finish.
Colgate, which saw five of its eight goals on the series come on the power play, scored the fifth of those just 91 seconds after Fillier's go-ahead goal as Neena Brick supplied the equalizer.
The game stood tied at 1-1 until early in the third period, when just more than three minutes into the final frame, Kristyna Kaltounkova scored to put the Raiders in front with what became the game-winning goal.
Connors ends her Princeton career ranked in the top 12 in program history in goals, assists and points. Connors 78th career goal in Saturday's game put her eighth in program history while her 67th career assist Sunday put her 11th and her 145th career point on that assist put her 12th.
Fillier will enter her senior season in the top 15 in all three categories, with Sunday's goal as her 63rd, 15th-best in program history, her 88th assist in Saturday's game placing her fourth, and her 151st career point with Sunday's goal tying her for ninth.
