Men's Basketball Overcomes Cornell, 89-82, in Henderson's 200th Career Victory

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University men's basketball team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to take down Cornell, 89-82, Friday night inside Jadwin Gymnasium in Franklin C. Cappon-Edward C. Green '40 Head Coach Mitch Henderson's 200th career victory.
The milestone was the second of the 2022-23 season for Henderson, as he also recorded his 100th career Ivy League on Saturday, January 7, when Princeton took down the Big Red, 75-68, in Ithaca, New York.
Prior to tip-off, an on-court ceremony was held celebrating the 25-year anniversary of the 1996, 1997 and 1998 teams, which featured Henderson and Cornell Head Coach Brian Earl as players.
Senior Tosan Evbuomwan led the Tigers with 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting, and led the team in assists with six. Junior Matt Allocco also added 16 points and four rebounds, while sophomore Blake Peters added a career-high 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting from three. The contest marked the second in a row Peters made five three-point field goals. Freshman Deven Austin finished with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and a career-high eight rebounds, and freshman Caden Pierce recorded his third double-double in the past four games, and his fourth of the season with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting along with 10 rebounds.
As a team, Princeton controlled the glass and out-rebounded the Big Red 34-28.
Cornell got off to a strong start, racing out to a 7-2 advantage with 18:13 left to play, but a layup by senior Keeshawn Kellman sparked a 7-0 run that put Princeton ahead, 9-7, after an Evbuomwan layup with 16:38 on the clock.
Princeton would extend its lead to eight, 22-16, with 11:36 remaining in the half after a pair of three pointers by Peters and a layup by Allocco. Shortly after, Cornell would battle back with a pair of 7-0 runs, and take 33-24 advantage with 6:58 remaining in the half. The Big Red would take a 10-point lead into halftime, 45-25.
Princeton had a strong start to the second half, with a jumper by Allocco igniting a 9-0 run that narrowed the deficit to four and made it 48-44 contest with 16:30 left to play following an Evbuomwan layup.
Another Evbuomwan layup would spark a 7-0 run, that tied it up at 51-51 after a Peters three-pointer at 13:12, and Princeton would soon take the lead at 54-53, after another Peters three with 12:24 remaining.
A pair of free throws by Allocco extended Princeton's advantage to seven, 69-62, with 7:30 on the clock, but Cornell made it a one-point game at 70-69 with 5:10 remaining. The Tigers held off a potential Big Red run, as Austin drove baseline and soared for a two-handed slam with 4:48 on the clock and ignited a 7-0 run that gave the Tigers a 77-69 lead at 1:50 after a layup by Evbuomwan.
Princeton closed the game out on a high note, with a three-point play by Austin and a Pierce by layup inside the final minute giving the Tigers the victory with a final score of 89-82.
