Thursday Night Recap: Glory, Monday Advance to Quarters
March 16, 2023 | Wrestling
Patrick Glory and Quincy Monday will return to the quarterfinals on Friday after their round-of-16 wins Thursday night at the 2023 NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Meeting 15th-seeded Brett Ungar of Cornell for the third time this season, 125-pounder and second seed Glory turned in a 10-0 major-decision win to complete the season sweep of Ungar between the teams' dual meet, the EIWA final and now the NCAA round of 16. Glory will take on Arizona State's 10th-seeded Brandon Courtney in Friday's daytime session. Glory defeated Courtney this season and last season as the teams had a home-and-home dual series.
The win put Glory in the quarterfinals for the third times in as many trips to the NCAAs. Glory is a four-time NCAA qualifier, but the 2020 championships were canceled due to the pandemic. One more win will clinch not only Glory's second straight semifinals bid, but a fourth All-American honor, making him the second Tiger in program history to achieve that, alongside former teammate Matthew Kolodzik '21.
Fifth-seeded Monday made it back-to-back trips to the quarters with a 4-1 win over Northern Illinois' 12th-seeded Izzak Olejnik, moving on to face upset-minded Caleb Fish of Michigan State. Fish, seeded 29th, has already knocked off two higher-seeded opponents, opening with an 8-4 win over Cornell's fourth-seeded Julian Ramirez, who has handed Monday his only two losses of the season, and following that up with a 7-2 win over Pittsburgh's 20th-seeded Holden Heller, who Monday beat in the quarterfinals at Midlands earlier this season. Monday and Fish have not wrestled collegiately.
Fellow senior Travis Stefanik, the 33rd seed at 285 a four-time NCAA qualifier, saw his Tiger career come to an end in a consolation match against 30th-seeded Hayden Copass of Purdue, 3-1.
Sophomore Luke Stout, seeded 23rd at 197 pounds, saw his second NCAA run in as many seasons with the program come to an end with a 7-4 consolation defeat against 26th-seeded Gavin Hoffman of Ohio State.
Here's Thursday's first-session recap. Brackets can be found here.
