Softball Team to Visit Cornell This Weekend as Ivy Race Continues

It's a one-game lead in the Ivy League standings with nine games to go for the Princeton softball team as the Tigers head to Cornell for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday.

Ivy standings: Princeton stands at 10-2, one game up on Harvard at 9-3 with Yale third at 7-5. With the new four-team Ivy League Tournament set for the second weekend of May this year, Columbia is presently in the fourth spot for the tournament at 6-6, a half-game up on Dartmouth (4-5). Yale is at Harvard for a three-game series this weekend in a matchup of the current second- and third-place teams.
On Princeton (17-14, 10-2 Ivy): The Tigers have won five in a row and 13 of 15 since returning from the spring trip. Serena Starks (.366), Adrienne Chang (.330) and Allison Ha (.310) are all batting above .300, and Alexis Laudenslager (8-8, 2.12 ERA, 85 2/3 IP), Brielle Wright (3-3, 3.43, 49), Molly Chambers (5-2, 3.44, 40 2/3) and Meghan Harrington (1-1, 2.71, 31) have split the innings in the circle. Laudenslager threw her fifth career no-hitter and third of the season last weekend against Columbia, becoming the first pitcher in program history with five career solo no-hitters and three in a season and winning her fifth Ivy Pitcher of the Week honor.Â
On Cornell (10-18, 3-6): Celia Macari leads Cornell at the plate with a .296 batting average and Gabrielle Maday (5-6, 3.43, 53), Mia Burd (3-4, 4.29, 49) and Kyrie Denny (2-8, 5.04, 41 2/3) have combined to throw 143 2/3 of the team's 185 innings on the season.
NCAA stat rankings: Catcher Ashley McDonald's 11 runners caught stealing stands 13th nationally, and Harrington's four saves also ranks 13th nationally. Laudenslager's 9.6 Ks-per-seven stands 25th and her 117 strikeouts are 50th. Ha is the 46th-toughest player to strike out, at one K per 21.8 at-bats. Cornell catcher Macari is also 13th nationally with 11 runners caught stealing, and Macari's 0.32 doubles per game are 41st.Â
Princeton-Cornell series: The Tigers took two of three in Princeton last year and the Big Red took two of three in Ithaca in 2019, the teams' last meeting in New York. All-time, Princeton leads the series with Cornell 45-37.
