Tigers Split Pair with Cornell
April 15, 2023 | Softball
With Saturday's results, the Tigers, at 11-3 in the Ivy, stand a half-game behind Harvard, which finished its weekend series with a sweep of Yale to stand at 12-3. Princeton can pull even with the Crimson heading into next weekend's series between the teams in Princeton if the Tigers win Sunday's series finale against Cornell.
Sunday's game is set for a 12:30 p.m. start with streaming available on ESPN+ in the U.S. and Stretch internationally. Live stats are available here.
Princeton won the opener, piling up a 9-0 lead over its first five at-bats before the Big Red put together a late-inning comeback.
After three scoreless innings, Princeton got on the board in the fourth. A Grace Jackson hit-by-pitch put a runner on to start the inning, and three batters later, Adrienne Chang singled her home to open the scoring. Cate Bade then followed with her first career homer, a two-run shot to put the Tigers up 3-0.
The fifth inning saw Princeton get six hits and a walk to score six runs and lead 9-0. Jackson had an RBI single, Julia Dumais had a two-run double, Chang followed her with an RBI double, and Abby Hornberger had a pinch-hit two-run double.
Cornell struck back with three in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game from ending early before pulling within 9-4 in the sixth.
Princeton scored what became the decisive run in the top of the seventh, with Lauren Sablone leading off with a single and coming around to score four batters later on a Sophia Marsalo base hit to make it 10-4.
The bottom of the seventh saw Cornell score five runs to pull within 10-9, but with the potential winning run at the plate, Princeton closed out the win.
Alexis Laudenslager went 4 1/3 innings to get the win, allowing a run on one hit and two walks, striking out four.
Princeton took an early lead in game two with three first-inning runs, but the Big Red tied it in the bottom half of the inning and took a 5-3 lead in the second, leading the rest of the way.
Base hits from Jackson, Dumais and Ha loaded the bases for Chang, who doubled two home before a Bade groundout made it 3-0.
Cornell's lead grew to 6-3 in the fourth before Princeton began to mount a comeback in the fifth. Serena Starks had a leadoff single, and two batters later, a Julia Dumais sacrifice fly brought Starks home to make it 6-4.
Back-to-back doubles from Hornberger and Dumais in the sixth pulled Princeton within 6-5, but a four-run bottom of the sixth pushed the Cornell lead to five at 10-5, a margin that became one too large for the Tigers in the seventh.
Two walks, two hits and an error led to four Princeton runs in the top of the seventh to get the Tigers within 10-9. Allison Ha and Bade each had a sacrifice fly, and pinch hitter Lauren Pappert had a two-run single for the game's final runs.
