Tigers Split at Dartmouth, One Win from Ivy Title; New Time Saturday
April 28, 2023 | Softball
One more win is all the Princeton softball team needs to earn a share of the Ivy League title and the chance to host the Ivy League Tournament as the Tigers head into Saturday's series finale at Dartmouth, now an 11:30 a.m. start, tied atop the Ivy following Friday's split with the Big Green, with Dartmouth taking the opener 7-0 before Princeton won the nightcap 4-1.
Princeton entered the day with a one-game lead on Harvard, but the Crimson swept a pair from Columbia to pull even. Princeton holds the tiebreaker over Harvard thanks to the Tigers' taking two of three from the Crimson in last weekend's regular-season series. The regular season decides the Ivy League title, with the Ivy League Tournament only for the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Should Princeton and Harvard end up tied after Saturday's respective series finales, both will be Ivy champs.
Friday's opener saw Dartmouth jump on Princeton early, with a walk and a hit putting two on for a Kelly Beaupre three-run homer in the first inning. The lead became 7-0 in the fourth on a two-run Ashley Frantz double, and a pair of RBI singles from Mary Beth Cahalan and Beaupre.
Rachel McCarroll limited the Tigers to a hit and a walk in seven innings in the opener, striking out two in the shutout win.
Princeton bounced back in game two behind Molly Chambers in the circle, with Chambers taking a shutout into the seventh before finishing having allowed a run on six hits and three walks, striking out three.Â
McCarroll again got the ball in game two, but Princeton's second look resulted in McCarroll allowing four runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks with a strikeout.Â
Princeton broke through in the third inning, with Sophia Marsalo leading off with a double and Grace Jackson scoring her two batters later on a groundout.
In the fifth, Marsalo got it going again, this time with a base hit before an unsuccessful fielder's choice allowed Cate Bade, running for Marsalo, to get to second on a ball Serena Starks hit. With two on, Allison Ha came through with a double to drive both home, and then Dumais followed with a hit to pick up Ha and make it 4-0.
Dartmouth spoiled the shutout in the seventh, using a single, a walk, a fielder's choice and a ground ball to put together a run, but Chambers finished off the win.
Saturday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available here.
