Columbia Gets Past Softball Team in Ivy Tournament Opener
May 11, 2023 | Softball
Holding off a late Tiger rally, Columbia defeated the Princeton softball team 3-1 on Thursday in the opening game of the Ivy League Tournament, sending Princeton into an elimination game with Yale to be played at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Friday back at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field.
Friday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ in the U.S. and Stretch internationally with live stats available here. Tickets are available here.
Columbia opened the scoring in the second inning, moving Georgia Corey around a base at a time after a leadoff single. Corey came home on a two-out double steal attempt, and the Lions had a 1-0 lead.
The sixth inning saw the Lions' Cami Neal hit a one-out homer to push the lead to 2-0, and Sarah Mikami brought home an Eleni Katsivalis double later in the inning to make it 3-0.
Columbia pitcher Raquel Reyes took a no-hitter into the sixth and set down the Tigers in order in three of the first four innings around a two-walk second inning before allowing a walk in the fifth.
Princeton broke through in the sixth, getting a leadoff base hit from Serena Starks and another hit from Grace Jackson. Two batters later, Julia Dumais got Princeton on the board with a base hit to pick up Starks, but Columbia got out of the inning when Lions third baseman Bubba Gleaves snared a hard-hit liner from Adrienne Chang and doubled Jackson off third to keep the score at 3-1.
Princeton started to put together a rally in the seventh, but a double play hurt the Tigers' chances. Sophia Marsalo led the inning off by getting first base on a hit-by-pitch, but Gleaves again came up with a big play on defense, catching a foul pop-up and doubling Marsalo off to squelch the rally.
