On to Saturday at the Ivy League Tournament for Princeton Softball
May 12, 2023 | Softball
A 2-0 win over Yale and an 8-4 win over Columbia kept the Princeton softball team alive Friday in the Ivy League Tournament, and the Tigers will look to win two more elimination games on Saturday in pursuit of the Ivy's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Princeton and Harvard will meet at noon Saturday back at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field. A Crimson win would send them to the NCAAs while a Princeton win in that game would force a decisive game right after.
Tickets are available here. The games will be streamed on ESPN+ in the U.S. and Stretch internationally with live stats available here.
The first game saw Alexis Laudenslager and Molly Chambers turn in a combined three-hit shutout of Yale with Laudenslager striking out six in five innings and Chambers fanning two in two innings.
Princeton opened the scoring in the first inning when Serena Starks led off with a single, moving around a base at a time before Allison Ha scored her on a sacrifice fly. It stayed 1-0 until the sixth when Julia Dumais had a one-out single and came home two batters later on an Adrienne Chang base hit.
Princeton again scored first in the Columbia game, but the Lions scored all four of their runs in the second inning and took a lead into the sixth. Back-to-back hits from Sophia Marsalo and Lauren Sablone plated Princeton's first run in the second inning before Columbia used four hits and a walk to pull in front, 4-1.
Princeton got two runs back in the fourth, using a Chang leadoff walk, a Marsalo double and a Lauren Pappert single to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Tigers were still a run down with two outs in the sixth when the go-ahead rally got going. Starks and Grace Jackson drew back-to-back walks before Dumais had a single to pick up Starks and Ha doubled home both Jackson and Dumais as Princeton took a 6-4 lead. The lead became 8-4 in the seventh when Marsalo and Sablone reached on a walk and a single to start the inning and an attempted sacrifice by Ashley McDonald resulted in a two-error play that scored both Tiger runners.
Laudenslager got the win in relief, going the last three innings while Princeton retook the lead and allowing just a walk while striking out three.
