PISCATAWAY – Kyle Vinci tied the Ivy League single-season record with his 18th and 19th home runs while also tying the Princeton record with 53 RBI, but the Rutgers Scarlet Knights took down the Princeton Baseball Team, 8-7, at Bainton Field on Wednesday evening.
After ending the previous half inning by throwing out a runner at third base from right field, Scott Bandura blasted an opposite field home run to Princeton ahead 1-0 in the second stanza.
After a run from Rutgers, Brendan Cumming doubled in Matt Scannell in the top of third and was followed by a Bandura RBI single.
Ryan Lasko got the home team within a run on an RBI knock up the middle in the fifth, but Vinci countered with a two-run home run to left center in the next at-bat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lasko tripled down the right field line to score two and close the gap to one, 5-4. A sacrifice fly two hitters later tied the game at 5-all.
With two out in the eighth, Vinci ripped another two-run home run over the fence, giving him his 19th of the season along with 52nd and 53rd RBI.
His 19th four-bagger ties the Ivy League record set by Gene Larkin (Columbia) in 1984. His 53 RBI broke the record that Drew Stratton set in 1985.
Following a two-run home run by Lasko, an RBI single by Jordan Sweeney gave Rutgers a walkoff win.
Bandura's four hits raised his average to .391 and extended his on-base streak to 32. He also scored three times and had two RBI.
Will Sword struck out five in six innings and allowed two unearned runs.
Princeton will take on Brown this weekend. The Tigers needs to sweep Brown this weekend while Penn (vs. Columbia) and Harvard (vs. Yale) need to lose twice for Princeton to win the Ivy regular season title and host the conference tournament.
