June 03, 2023 | Heavyweight Rowing
WEST WINDSOR – The No. 3 Princeton Men's Heavyweight Team saw its first varsity earn a spot in the IRA Grand Final with an impressive victory in its semifinal on Saturday morning.
The V8 took over Yale for first before the 1,000m mark and led the rest of the way, finishing at 6:04.73 in front of the Bulldogs (6:07.21) and Syracuse (6:09.52). It's the first Grand Final for the V8 since 2019. Princeton's top boat is looking for its first IRA medal since 2016. The varsity eight Grand Final is the last race of the IRA Championships at 10:40 a.m. tomorrow.
"Our 1V rowed a really solid race today in the semifinal and it was a good step forward for us," said Princeton head coach Greg Hughes. "There's a lot of parity in men's rowing this year and there's so many fast crews. Tomorrow is a new day and we're excited that we have an opportunity to race in the championship final."
Princeton's 2V just missed out on a Grand Final appearance, finishing fourth in its semifinal (6:23.66) behind Dartmouth (6:20.62). The Tigers and Big Green were neck and neck, but Dartmouth pulled away at the 1500m mark and took third. The 2V's Petite Final is at 9:40 a.m. Sunday.
The Tigers' 3V was fourth in its semifinal (6:43.85), trailing Washington (6:29.18), California (6:32.23) and Yale (6:33.67). 3V's Petite Final is at 9:10 tomorrow.
Princeton's varsity four finished up racing with a fourth-place finish in its third final (7:16.19) behind Boston (7:10.08), Syracuse (7:12.38) and Oklahoma City (7:14.36).
