Princeton Falls To UConn 3-1, Looks Ahead To Ivy Opener
September 17, 2023 | Field Hockey
If there are two better sub-.500 teams in Division I field hockey than Princeton and UConn, the list isn't long. Both are NCAA champions within the last 11 years. Both are used to playing in November. Both are looking to make a big jump as 2023 goes along.

The teams met Sunday afternoon on Bedford Field with a combined record of 4-9 heading in, and it was UConn who came away with Win No. 5, defeating Princeton 3-1 in a game in which all four goals were scored in the fourth quarter.

Princeton, who came into the game after having knocked off No. 5 Maryland Thursday, is now 2-4. UConn is now 2-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Princeton and UConn were scoreless through 45 minutes before the teams scored four times in the final 15. UConn's Sophia Ugo redirected a cross from Madi Herb just over a minute into the fourth to finally break through, and then the Huskies added two more in the next eight minutes, when Julia Bressler had a tap-in on the back end and then Sol Simone knocked in a rebound after two Robyn Thompson saves.

Princeton answered late in the game when UConn was called for a penalty stroke after three straight Tiger corners. Sam Davidson calmly drilled it in, marking the second straight game she has scored on a stroke.

UConn's Natalie Mckenna made nine saves, while Thompson had five for the Tigers. Princeton had a 13-12 advantage on shots as the teams combined for 11 in the first three quarters and then 14 in the fourth.

WHAT THE BOX SCORE DOESN'T TELL YOU
* Davidson is now 11 for 11 in her career on penalty strokes.

* Princeton avoided being shut out, something that hasn't happened to the Tigers since the 2018 NCAA semifinals against Maryland (a 1-0 OT loss).

* This was Princeton's first game this season that was not decided by one goal.

UP NEXT
The Tigers open their Ivy League season Friday afternoon on Bedford before hopping on a plane to play at Northwestern next Sunday.
