Dempsey's Late Goal Gives Tigers Ivy Opening 2-1 Win Over Columbia
September 22, 2023 | Field Hockey
It was getting late, and a team that has to leave early was in danger of getting even less sleep than it otherwise would. Ava Dempsey and Talia Schenck changed all of that, ensuring that even if the Princeton field hockey team doesn't get a lot of sleep Friday night, the sleep it does get will be restful.
Dempsey's blast from the top of the circle with 3:03 remaining, set up by a great feed from Schenck, gave Princeton a 2-1 win over Columbia in its Ivy League opener Friday afternoon on Bedford Field. The Tigers now head to Northwestern for a game Sunday at noon Eastern time, with a flight early Saturday morning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Schenck started the scoring six minutes into the game with a great steal on a pass into the Columbia circle and shot that ripped into the cage when she was one on one with Columbia goalie Katie Wimmer. Princeton piled up corners and shots but could not add on to its lead, and the Lions tied it with with 9:50 to play when Mckenzie Bloom redirected a feed from Anabelle Brodeur into the goal.
It stayed that way until Schenck took the ball down the left side and then sent it into the circle, where Dempsey stopped it, turned and drilled it home for the winner.
Wimmer made nine saves for Columbia as Princeton had ad 22-5 edge in shots, including 13-1 in the second half. Princeton had a season high 14 corners; in fact, Princeton had 23 in its first six games combined.
THINGS THE BOX SCORE DOESN'T TELL YOU
* Dempsey, a sophomore, now has two career goals, both against Columbia.
* Princeton has never lost to Columbia. The Tigers now lead the overall series 25-1.
* Princeton has played seven games, six of which have been decided by one goal.
UP NEXT
Princeton gets up early Saturday for its flight to Chicago. Princeton and Northwestern meet for the third time ever, with a Princeton win in 1981 and a Northwestern OT win a year ago. Both of those meetings were in Princeton.
