Pietra Four-din! Tordin Ties Program Record in Win Over Army West Point
September 02, 2023 | Women's Soccer
Though she was Princeton's leading goal scorer as a rookie last season, Pietra Tordin entered Saturday night's game with Army West Point with her first hat trick still as a milestone to achieve in an already standout college career.Â
Tordin got that hat trick and did one better in a 4-3 win over the Black Knights on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium, becoming the sixth player in program history to score four goals in a game, matching the program single-game record and becoming the first Tiger to get four in a game since Tyler Lussi '17, also in her sophomore season of 2014.Â
The first goal came in the ninth minute, when Tordin received a pass in the 18 from Kate Toomey, weaving through the end of a six-yard box that contained five Army defenders and threading a shot through to get Princeton on the board.
Army's Cami Silvestro found the equalizer on a free kick less than four minutes later, and it stayed 1-1 almost 15 minutes into the second half. Army's Madison Woodward headed in a Silvestro corner kick to put the Black Knights up 2-1.
Just as Army found the tying goal soon after Princeton took the lead in the first half, the Tigers answered right back when Army went in front, with Tordin taking a pass from Kayla Wong less than four minutes after Army took the lead to even it at 2-2, sending one just inside the left post from about 25 yards out.
Thirteen minutes later, Tordin struck again to regain the lead for Princeton after Heather MacNab's throw in found Lexi Hiltunen for Hiltunen to dish a quick pass to Tordin to finish straight on from just inside the 18.
Seven minutes after earning her first career hat trick, Tordin joined the four-goal club, burying a free kick in the top-left corner of the goal from about 25 yards out to put Princeton up 4-3 with six-plus minutes to go in the game. That one turned out to be the game winner as Jasmine Talley put in a rebound to pull the Black Knights within 4-3 with a minute to go.
Tordin stands at seven goals on the season over Princeton's first four games, already nearly equaling her eight goals from her Ivy Rookie of the Year-winning freshman season in 2022.
The win keeps Princeton unbeaten on the season at 3-0-1 heading into Thursday's trip to Penn State, ranked this week at No. 6 in the nation.Â
