Women's Volleyball Opens Ivy Play With 3-1 Triumph at Penn

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team opened Ivy League play on a high note Friday night inside the Palestra, downing the University of Pennsylvania 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-18).
Senior Kathleen Bishop led the team with a career-high 14 kills on .500 hitting percentage while also adding two blocks. Freshman Sydney Draper recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a match-high 42 assists and 13 digs, while Sydney Bold recorded a team-high 19 digs. Sophomore Lucia Scalamandre added 11 kills, a match-high seven blocks and tied the match-high in service aces with senior Maya Satchell, each ending the match with two.
Princeton got off to a fast start, opening the match on a 6-0 run ignited by a junior Mariah Haislip kill. The Quakers would battle back, using a 6-0 run of their own to tie the score at 8-8. The Tigers would shortly after take control again, with a freshman Kamryn Chaney kill sparking a 3-0 run that put Princeton in front, 15-12. The set became a back-and-forth battle, with the Tigers taking a 22-12 advantage following a Quaker service error. Penn would go on to close the set out on a 4-0 run, winning it 25-22.
Penn opened the second set with a 3-0 run, but the Tigers came roaring back into it. A Scalamandre kill led a 9-0 Princeton run that saw the Tigers surge ahead, 12-5, following a Draper kill. A 3-0 Quaker run narrowed the deficit to three at 15-12, but the Tigers responded with 4-0 run and extended their lead to 19-12. The Tigers closed the set out on a high note with a kill by Bishop sparking a 4-0 run on which Princeton ended the set on, leveling the match at 1-1 with a 25-14 second set victory.
Another kill by Bishop led a 3-0 Princeton run to open the third set, and a kill by freshman Erin McNair sparked a 4-0 run that gave the Tigers a 7-1 advantage. A pair of 3-0 runs saw the Tigers extend their lead to nine at 17-8, but a 6-0 Quaker run saw Penn narrow the deficit to three at 17-14. A Bishop kill ignited a 4-0 Princeton run that saw the Tigers regain control, getting ahead 22-15 then holding on to the prevail in the set 25-21.
The Quakers raced out to a 8-2 lead in the fourth set, a kill by Draper led a 5-0 run that made it a one-point set at 8-7. Princeton continued to chip away, with Bishop's career-high 13th kill leading a 3-0 run saw the Tigers knot the score at 14-14. The Quakers would take a 16-15 lead, but a 5-0 run capped of a Draper kill put Princeton back in front 22-17. The Tigers closed the match out on a 3-0 run featuring kills by Draper, Satchell and Bishop, winning the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
