PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team completed the weekend sweep to open Ivy League play Saturday night inside Dillon Gymnasium, outlasting the University of Pennsylvania 3-2 (25-9, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-11) in what was the Tigers' 15th-straight victory over the Quakers.
Senior Kathleen Bishop led the Tigers in kills, setting a new career-high for the second-straight match with 17 and hitting .394. Sophomore Lucia Scalamandre had 13 kills, hitting .440, and a match-high five blocks along with four digs and two service aces. Junior Mariah Haislip also recorded double-digit kills for Princeton with 13 on a .579 hitting percentage, while freshman Erin McNair added 10 kills.
Freshman Sydney Draper tallied her second-straight and sixth double-double of the season with a game-high 61 assists and 10 digs, while also adding three kills and three service aces. Sophomore Ella Bunde recorded a match-high and career-high five service aces. Freshman Sydney Bold's 21 digs were also a team-high. Princeton was also aided in victory by a season-bests in kills and service aces, with 62 and 11.
An early 5-0 Princeton run that featured three-consecutive Bunde service aces saw the Tigers race out to a 7-1 lead. A setter dump by Draper would soon ignite a 7-0 run and gave the Tigers an 11-point advantage, 17-6. Princeton then put the set completely out of reach with a 4-0 run, this time led by a Bishop kill as the Tigers went up, 21-7, and would prevail in the set 25-9.
The Quakers took an 11-7 lead in the second set, but Princeton chipped away and narrowed the deficit to one, 14-12, following a kill by junior Maya Satchell and a block by Haislip. Princeton showed its resilience, knotting the score at 20-20 following back-to-back Scalamandre kills as part of 7-0 run on which it would close the set out on. The Tigers would earn the 25-20 second set victory and go up 2-0 in the match.
Penn refused to lay down in the third set, jumping out to a 15-11 lead, but Princeton stayed in it; a kill by Satchell sparked a 3-0 run that saw the Tigers it up at 16-16. A Bishop kill led a 3-0 run that saw Princeton take the lead at 20-19, but the Quakers were able to take the third set, coming out on top 25-22.
The Tigers got off to a strong start in the fourth set, using an early 4-0 run led by a Bishop kill to take an 8-4 lead. Shortly after, Penn responded with a 5-0 run and gained a 13-11 advantage. Three-straight Bishop kills helped Princeton retake the lead, 16-14, but a 6-0 Quaker run gave Penn a 23-21 lead. Penn would send it five, triumphing in the fourth set 25-22.
While it was the Quakers who took a 3-1 lead in the fifth set, a kill by Bishop sparked a 6-0 run, giving Princeton a 7-3 advantage.
