Women's Volleyball Falls in Home Opener to Santa Clara

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team fell in its home opener Tuesday night inside Dillon Gymnasium to Santa Clara, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 27-25).
Freshman Kamryn Chaney led the Tigers in kills with 14, and freshman Sydney Draper finished with a team-high 33 assists. Along with her seven kills and .500 hitting percentage, sophomore Lucia Scalamandre finished with a match-high three service aces and tied the match-high in blocks with junior Mariah Haislip, each finishing with four. Princeton was led in digs by freshman Sydney Bold, who had nine.
The first set began as a back-and-forth battle; despite three early kills by Haislip the Broncos were able to create some separation by taking a 14-12 lead. A Chaney kill sparked a 3-0 run that saw Princeton take a 15-14 lead, but the Broncos were able to keep it close and then use a 5-0 run to prevail in the set, 25-20.
Santa Clara opened the second set on a 4-0 run and while the Tigers were able to narrow the deficit to three at 11-8 then against at 23-20 following a double block by Haislip and Chaney, but the Broncos would take the second set with a score of 25-21.
A Chaney kill opened the third set as the Tigers took an early 5-3 lead, but Santa Clara used a 6-0 run to take a 9-5 advantage. A 4-0 run saw the Broncos extend their lead to 13-6, but the Tigers used a 5-0 run that included a pair of Scalamandre service aces to make it a two-point contest at 14-12. A 6-0 Princeton run that featured back-to-back double blocks by Scalamandre and senior Kathleen Bishop tied the score at 20-20. A Chaney kill put Princeton up 25-24, but Santa Clara ended the match on a 3-0 run and won the set 27-25, and the match 3-0.
