Women's Basketball Starts Fast; Runs Off 79-38 Win Over Cornell

ITHACA – Princeton Women's Basketball raced out with 16 of the first 17 points and never looked back in a 79-38 victory over the Cornell Big Red at Newman Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Princeton eventually led 20-6 after the first quarter with Madison St. Rose scoring nine of her 20 points in the first 10 minutes.
Cornell got the game within nine, 20-11, with 8:58 left in the first half, but the Tigers ripped off 13 straight to push the game back out of reach. Princeton held a 37-18 advantage at halftime.
Kaitlyn Chen (13) and St. Rose (12) combined to outscore Cornell in the first half by seven points as Princeton shot almost 50 percent (47.1) in the first 20 minutes.
After the first two minutes of the second half, Cornell never got its deficit back under 20.
St. Rose led all scorers with her 20 points. Chen put up 15 points, seven assists and a personal-high five steals. Only 17 players this season have reach those benchmarks during a game. Ellie Mitchell contributed her 46th career 10+ rebound performance in the victory.
The Tigers scored 33 points off 23 Cornell turnovers. The Big Red had two quarters with single-digit outputs and recorded three frames with three baskets or less.
Princeton improves to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League. Head coach Carla Berube's unit goes back on the road next weekend to take on Harvard on Jan. 13 (2 p.m.) and Dartmouth on Jan. 15 (6 p.m.).
