Women's Soccer Powers Past Dartmouth on Senior Day, Sets Up Ivy Title Showdown
October 26, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Four second-half goals delivered three Ivy League standings points and a final home regular-season win for the seven-member Princeton women's soccer Class of 2025 on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Stadium as the Tigers roared past Dartmouth, 4-0.
With Princeton's win and Columbia rallying past Yale for its own win on Saturday, next weekend's game at Columbia will deliver both the Ivy League title and hosting duties for the Ivy League Tournament to the winner. A tie would deliver those to the Lions, with Columbia at 5-0-1 with 16 points and Princeton at 5-1-0 with 15.Â
A game that was 0-0 at the half and with total shots at 2-2 broke open not long after the second half began. Brooke Dawahare drew a foul just beyond the 18-yard box, and Pietra Tordin arced the kick over the Dartmouth wall and under the crossbar to get Princeton on the board.
Just more than a minute later, Kate Toomey headed down a ball off a Dartmouth free kick that started in the Big Green's defensive end. Alexandra Barry flicked the loose ball to Drew Coomans along the right side, still on Princeton's defensive side of the midfield stripe, and Coomans took it the rest of the way, threading a shot past her Dartmouth defender and across the front of the goal to make it 2-0, still with 40-plus minutes to play.
Twelve minutes later, Princeton sent back another Dartmouth free kick from its own defensive half, this time with Lily Bryant redirecting the ball back toward Princeton's attacking half and Barry again playing the intermediary, this time finding Tordin charging up the left side. Tordin had three touches on the way to the goal, receiving the pass in between two Dartmouth defenders, then bodying the ball down and sending a shot from the top of the 18, all while racing past the pair of Big Green players looking to snuff out the try. Instead, the lead grew to 3-0, still with 28 minutes to play.
Brooke Dawahare had the final goal just three minutes later. Zoe Markesini kept the ball in Princeton's attacking half just ahead of midfield and found Heather MacNab along the left side. MacNab then sent a pass toward the far post as she closed in on the top corner of the 18, finding Dawahare for a header and a 4-0 lead.
Princeton ended up outshooting Dartmouth 16-5 overall and 7-1 on goal as Tyler McCamey made one save and helped turn aside seven Dartmouth corner kicks for her sixth shutout of the year, 16th shutout of her career and 28th win of her career.
Tordin's two goals lifted her to 26 for her career, putting the junior in a three-way tie for eighth in program history. Of those top 10 career goal scorers, Tordin is the third to play for Sean Driscoll, who is in his ninth competitive season leading the program, alongside Tyler Lussi '17, who holds the record at 53, and Mimi Asom '19, who is third at 43.
Princeton and Columbia will meet next Saturday, Nov. 2, at Columbia for a 2 p.m. kick. Both teams have already clinched a spot in the four-team Ivy League Tournament, which will be Nov. 8 and 10 at either Princeton or Columbia.
