October 05, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore Kamryn Chaney exceeded 20 kills for the fifth time in the 2024 season as the Princeton University women's volleyball team fell to Yale, 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 28-26), Saturday evening inside Dillon Gymnasium.
Chaney led the match with 24 kills on a .404 hitting percentage and added four digs. Junior Lucia Scalamandre tallied 13 kills on a .500 hitting percentage along with a match-high five blocks while sophomore Sydney Draper handed out a team-high 45 assists. Senior Gracie Wood recorded a team-high three service aces, tying her career-high, and sophomore Sydney Bold finished with a match-high 19 digs.
With help from a 5-0 run, Yale jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first set. Princeton responded with a 5-0 run of its own, narrowing the deficit to one at 10-9 following a Scalamandre solo block. Shortly after, Princeton was able to use another 5-0 run to surge ahead, 12-10. The Bulldogs battled back to take an 18-15 advantage, but a Chaney kill followed by a pair of Yale attacking errors made it a one-point set at 21-20. After a back-and-forth first set, it was the Bulldogs who prevailed, 25-22.
Princeton got off to a strong start in the second set, going up 10-6 following a Wood service ace. The Tigers soon extended their lead to four, 15-11, after a kill by Chaney and a service ace by Bold. A double block by Scalamandre and junior Valerie Nutakor led a 3-0 run that gave the Tigers a 20-14 advantage; Nutakor would punish a Bulldog overpass on set point as Princeton leveled the match up at 1-1, winning the second set with a score of 25-19.
Yale was dominant in the third set, using an 8-0 run to take a 14-4 lead. The Bulldogs did not look back from there, earning a 25-16 third set victory.
The fourth set was played to a stalemate at 7-7, but a kill by senior Mariah Haislip followed by a Scalamandre kill put Princeton ahead, 9-7. Yale would eventually take the lead at 15-14. An incredible display of heart and hustle in the form of a lengthy back-and-forth rally took place soon after, resulting in a Nutakor kill that made it 16-15. A kill by Scalamandre sparked a 3-0 run that gave Princeton a 19-18 edge; the Tigers took set point at 24-23 after a Chaney kill but it was Yale who steal the fourth set, 28-26, earning the 3-1 victory in the match.
