Women’s Ice Hockey Falls To St. Lawrence In Home Opener
November 01, 2024 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J.- It was a great crowd for women's ice hockey's home opener versus St. Lawrence on Friday night and the fans in Baker Rink saw a glimpse of a new Princeton goal-scoring threat as well as a returning star despite a 6-2 loss to the No. 7-ranked visiting team from the North Country.
Rookie Mackenzie Alexander scored for the fourth time in five games this season, while Issy Wunder had a goal and an assist for the Tigers. Taylor Lum had two goals for St. Lawrence.
The Saints got off to a fast start with a goal 1:29 into the first period with Lum's first of the game and then doubled its lead just past the midway mark of the first period via a Katina Duscio goal.
The Tigers needed some momentum and took advantage of their first power play of the game when Mackenzie Alexander found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season with assists from Issy Wunder and Rosie Klein on a pretty sequence of tic-tac-toe hockey to secure Princeton's first goal of the season on home ice. That goal continued Princeton's hot start on the power play this season as the Tigers are now first in the country with a 46.7% success rate on the power play.

St. Lawrence added to their lead in the second period, regaining a two-goal advantage when Lum tallied her second of the night 5:45 into the middle period.
Issy Wunder cut the lead to one with a goal midway through the second period after Emerson O'Leary forced a turnover deep in the St. Lawrence zone and funneled the puck to her linemate who quickly fired home a goal.
Princeton's thoughts of a comeback were quickly snuffed, though, when the Saints countered 0:47 later to once again build a two-goal lead. Two more goals in the third period for Saint Lawrence provided insurance and a 6-2 final score.
Princeton will be back at Baker tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. to face the No. 5-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights.
