Tigers Defeat Dartmouth on the Road, 2-1
November 02, 2024 | Men's Soccer
HANOVER, N.H. – A brace by Nico Nee delivered Princeton its fifth Ivy League win of the season at Dartmouth on Saturday night, 2-1. With the win, Princeton improves to 10-5 on the season and 5-1 in the Ivy League, while Dartmouth falls to 5-7-3 and 2-3-1 in conference play.
"Our guys came out strong in the first half and Nico finished two chances really well. We knew we would have to weather Dartmouth's comeback attempt in the second half as they had us on our heels for a while. But the guys fought hard and got a huge road win to set up a championship with Penn on Saturday." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers struck early as a curling pass into the box from Gabe Duchovny in the third minute found the foot of Nee, who chipped the ball in above the Dartmouth keeper Costi Christodoulou to put the Tigers up 1-0.
Princeton continued to control possession, keeping the ball largely in the attacking end with two corner kicks and a shot by Sam Vigilante that went just high.
With a corner in the 21st minute, though, the knocking Tigers would add another as Nee scored again on a rebounded shot from Liam Beckwith.
Both sides continued the physical battle for the remainder of the first half, but Princeton would still carry the 2-0 lead into halftime.
Entering the second half, Princeton kept up the energy, registering four shots between the 64th and 70th minutes.
However, the momentum shifted in the 72nd minute as Dartmouth got one back with a shot from Kristian Feed from outside the box, bringing the score to 2-1.
With renewed energy, the Big Green searched for an equalizer, forcing the Tiger defense to lock them out for the remainder of the match as goalkeeper Andrew Samuels made two saves to keep the score 2-1 Tigers.
With five minutes remaining, it looked as though Princeton would add to the lead as another shot by Beckwith ricocheted off the crossbar and a succeeding shot by Daniel Ittycheria went just wide.
Both sides continued to fight for the next goal as the clock ran out, ultimately ending the match and delivering the Tigers the 2-1 victory.
