Men's Basketball Wraps Up Myrtle Beach Invitational With 94-67 Victory Over Portland

CONWAY, S.C. – The Princeton University men's basketball team ended the Myrtle Beach Invitational on a high note, receiving 52 bench points in a 94-67 victory over Portland.
The win was the Tigers' first by 15 or more at a neutral site since Mar. 18, 2023, when Tigers took down No. 7 seed Missouri in the Sweet Sixteen, 78-63. It was also Princeton's first win by 20 or more since Mar. 9, 2024, when Tigers overcome the University of Pennsylvania inside the Palestra, 105-83.
Freshman CJ Happy led the way with a game and season-high 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 shooting from three. Junior Caden Pierce scored 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting, and senior Blake Peters added 14 points. Peters, who made four three-pointers, moved up to No. 14 on the Tigers' all-time list for three-pointers made, as he now has 145. Freshman Malik Abdullahi also contributed 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting and four rebounds. On the defensive end, freshman Jack Stanton recorded a game and season-high five steals, which was the most by a Princeton player since Ryan Lanborg '23 had five in a win over Northeastern at the London Basketball Classic on Nov. 26, 2022.
The Tigers got off to a strong start, with a Pierce layup followed by a Peters three-pointer putting Princeton up 5-0 with 18:59 on the clock. Another 5-0 run, also featuring a Peters three-pointer along with a Pierce layup extended the Tigers' advantage to nine, 14-5, with 15:56 remaining in the half.
Portland narrowed the deficit to four at 12:04, 16-12, but a layup by Happy ignited a 9-0 run that gave the Tigers a 25-13 advantage with 9:00 left to play. Princeton would extend its lead to 16, 31-15, after a layup by junior Xaivian Lee with 6:36 on the clock. A three-pointer by freshman Peyton Seals put Princeton in front 19 at 3:10, 42-23, and the Tigers took a 53-29 advantage into halftime.
Princeton opened the second half with a 9-0 run that included a Peters three-pointer followed by back-to-back sophomore Dalen Davis three pointers, increasing its lead to 61-29 with 17:41 on the clock. The Tigers would soon use an 8-0 run, led by a short jumper by sophomore Jackson Hicke, that gave Princeton a 39-point lead at 12:25, 76-37.
A Stanton three-pointer with 8:49 remaining put Princeton up 40, 82-42. From there, the Tigers held off the Pilots and would earn the 94-67 victory to wrap up the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
