November 03, 2024 | Wrestling
PRINCETON, N.J. – With three Tigers claiming championship titles and four others placing, the Princeton wrestling team began the 2024-25 season at home with the annual Princeton Open on Sunday.
Ty Whalen claimed the 149 lb title while Mikey Squires and Sebastian Garibaldi captured the 184 and heavyweight championships.
How It Happened
Whalen’s journey to the top took five matches, beginning with two technical falls in the rounds of 32 and 16. The quarterfinals saw Whalen earn an 8-2 decision, before moving on to get the major decision, 15-2, against Lehigh’s Kelvin Griffin in the semifinals. The championship match against Lucas Kapusta was a 2-1 victory for Whalen as he claimed the title.
Squires picked up a major decision in the round of 16 before moving on to defeat Rider’s Brock Zurawski in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal match against Lock Haven’s Jared Lledo, Squires’s aggressive energy and a series of takedowns secured him the major decision 21-10. The final match against Colin Fegley, also of Lock Haven, was an 8-3 Squires win.
Garibaldi dominated his first two matches, pinning Lock Haven’s Ethan Miller in the round of 16 and getting a major decision against Hofstra’s Danny Church, 14-2. The semifinal match against West Point’s Brady Colbert was a close battle, but Garibaldi’s resilience and toughness enabled him to take the 5-4 victory. In the championship, Garibaldi was again faced with an intense matchup, but he was triumphant as he took first place with a 2-0 decision.

In the 125 lb class, freshman Ethan Rivera claimed fifth place in his collegiate debut. Classmate Xavier Giles also took sixth place in the 174 lb category in his first outing in the Orange & Black.
133 lb sophomore Drew Heethuis also placed sixth in his class, picking up a technical fall in the round of 32 before wrestling back into the standings with three wins and two major decisions.
Across 10 mats with hundreds of matchups taking place in Jadwin Gym, the Tigers had a strong first outing to begin the season, with results on the podium and wins both on and off the mat that they will build upon in the coming weeks.
Up Next
Princeton will take to the mat again later this month at the Jersey Jostle against LIU and NC State on November 17th. The meet will take place at the Poland Springs Arena in Toms River, N.J. beginning at 9 a.m.
