Baseball Earns Doubleheader Split With Navy Behind 22-Run Outburst In Game 2

An RBI single by Brock Murtha gave Navy a 1-0 lead in the third inning before a five-run fourth made it 6-0.
Jake Bold got the Tigers on the board with an RBI double down the left field line in the sixth. Later in the frame, Jake Koonin plated two more with a double. Jake Kernodle brought the road team within two on an RBI groundout.
Down to their final out, Nick DiPietrantonio blasted a solo shot, making it 6-5. The Tigers brough the winning run to the plate, but a strikeout ended the game.
Matt Scannell had three hits to pace the Tigers while DiPietrantonio, Bold and Koonin had two knocks each.
Sean Episcope allowed one earned run in four innings while Patrick Jarvis had two scoreless relief frames.
Princeton 22, Navy 12
Bold opened the game with a two-run home run in the first stanza, but Navy countered with a seven-run at-bat in the next half inning.
The Tigers got RBI hits from Kaden Kram and Jay Mentink in the second, but the Midshipmen countered with a run in their at-bat.
Down by four, 8-4, Jordan Kelly and Jake Kernodle RBI hits cut the road unit's deficit in half while Kram's sacrifice fly got head coach Scott Bradley's group within one, 8-7.
Princeton threw up an impressive 11 runs over the next two innings helped by nine hits. A Kye Vinci RBI triple tied the game and he later scored on an error. After a groundout, the Tigers went single, walk, single, single, walk, and single to extend its advantage to 13-8 in the fourth.
Back-to-back two-run doubles by Koonin and Caden Shapiro highlighted the five-run fifth.
Navy scored twice in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Vinci homered in the eighth while DiPietrantonio's three-run four-bagger wrapped up the offensive outburst.
The Tigers' 22 runs are the most they've recorded in a game since 2016 while their 24 hits are the fourth most ever in a contest.
Princeton will take on Richmond Monday at 1:30 p.m. before two with Old Dominion on Tuesday (3 p.m.) and Wednesday (3 p.m.).
