LEWISBURG, Pa. - At this year's EIWA Championships held by Bucknell, the Princeton wrestling team showcased five Tigers on the podium. This marks the eighth consecutive year, dating back to the 2014-2015 season, that Princeton has had a finalist in the EIWA tournament, with Nate Dugan contending for the 184-pound title. The Tigers finished 8th overall with a team score of 68.5.
Ahead of the DI 2024 Wrestling National Championships in Kansas City in two weeks, Princeton secured three spots with wrestlers Luke Stout, Nate Dugan, and Matt Cover. The Tigers will be eagerly anticipating the NCAA selection show on Wednesday, March 13th, to determine any at-large bids for this year's tournament.
Matt Cover, seeded eighth, concluded the tournament by securing fourth place on the podium. Cover achieved a 4-2 record in competition, defeating the fourth-seeded Keaton Kluevar. The senior secured two victories by major decision but came up short in the third-place match, losing to the fifth-ranked Lewis Fernandes from Cornell. Nevertheless, Matt Cover has earned qualification for the national tournament and secures a place in Kansas City.
Tyler Vazquez, seeded twelfth, secured fifth place at 141 pounds. Despite losing his initial match of the tournament, the freshman displayed resilience in the consolation bracket, ultimately achieving a commendable 4-2 record on the mat throughout the weekend. Vazquez showcased his young collegiate prowess by securing two pins, one of which occurred during the fifth-place match in session IV of the tournament.
Eligh Rivera, seeded fifth, clinched a seventh-place finish at 149 pounds. Another freshman, he battled in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket but fell short, which required him to make a climb through the consolation ladder. Rivera concluded the tournament with a 3-2 record. In the seventh-place match, he emerged triumphant with a high-scoring victory of 14-9 over the twelfth-seeded Richard Fedalen.
Luke Stout secured sixth place at this year's tournament. On the first day of competition, Stout achieved a flawless 2-0 record, highlighted by an impressive technical fall victory over the fifth-seeded Cole Urbas, with a commanding score of 17-2 (6:35). However, Stout encountered an unfortunate circumstance, leading to his withdrawal from the semifinals. Nonetheless, Stout will mark his third appearance at this year's NCAA Championships.
