Baseball Opens Ivy Play With Pair Of 4-3 Victories Over Cornell

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University baseball team opened Ivy League play with a sweep of Cornell Friday at Clarke Field. The Tigers took down the Big Red, 4-3, in both games.
Game One
Princeton 4, Cornell 3
The Big Red opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the fifth. Princeton answered in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, including a Matt Scannell RBI single and a two-run blast by Caden Shapiro.
Cornell's Max Jenson homered in the top of the eighth to tie the game and send it to extra innings knotted at 3-3. In the bottom of the tenth, with the bases loaded and two outs, Shapiro drew a walk to bring home Bryce Gayan and give the orange and black a walk off victory.
Justin Kim pitched seven strong innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out four. Jacob Faulkner threw three scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two hits to earn the win.
Game Two
Princeton 4, Cornell 3
Despite a double left center by Jake Koonin in the bottom of the second, it was the Big Red who was first on the scoreboard with a two RBI homer at the top of the fourth. Nick DiPietrantonio singled to right field in the bottom of the fourth and advanced Koonin to third as Princeton attempted to battle back.
After Shaprio walked in the bottom of the sixth, Bold doubled to left center. A single to shortstop by DiPietrantonio advanced Shapiro to third before a sac fly by Koonin saw the Tigers get on the scoreboard after Shapiro scored.
The Tigers would tie it up in the bottom of the eighth, 3-3, after Shapiro walked then Kyle Vinci launched two-run home run to left field. Shortly after, Koonin advanced to first on a wild pitch then to second a balk. He proceeded to steal third then score after an RBI single by Jordan Kelly, putting Princeton up 4-3. From there, the Tigers held on for the victory and completed the Friday sweep.
Sean Episcope pitched six innings for Princeton, striking out six, while Andrew D'Alessio pitched three and struck out one.
With the victory in game two, Princeton head coach Scott Bradley collected his 450th career victory.
