Tigers Split Pair at Columbia to Open Ivy League Season
March 22, 2024 | Softball
It was a split on Friday for the Princeton softball team as the Ivy League season opened at Columbia.
Princeton took the first game 6-5. After Princeton's Cassidy Shaw and Columbia's Raquel Reyes dueled for three scoreless innings, the Tigers got on the board in the fourth when Sonia Zhang led off with a single and came home on an Allison Ha triple.
The fifth inning saw Princeton add three runs on two hits, a walk and an error to take a 4-0 lead, and after Julia Dumais and Lauren Sablone had seventh-inning hits, Karis Ford drove home both with a double to make it 6-0.
The Tigers needed all those runs as Columbia clawed back with five in the seventh, but Shaw, who left the game after six innings, re-entered to shut the door. Shaw finished with five hits and two walks allowed, striking out three in in 6 1/3 shutout innings.
Columbia scored late again in the second game, getting eight runs across the fifth and sixth innings to turn a one-run deficit after four and a half innings into a 9-3 win.
Columbia opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second before Princeton answered with a Ha single to pick up a base hit from Zhang two batters earlier.
Princeton took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Sablone doubled home a one-out walk to Zhang, but the late Columbia surge overcame that with five in the fifth and three in the sixth. Princeton picked up a run in the seventh after starting the inning with a Lauren Pappert walk and base hits from Zhang and Sablone before a Ha ground ball scored Zhang.
Meghan Harrington, Molly Chambers and Brielle Wright split time in the circle for the Tigers in the nightcap.
After skipping Saturday due to expected rain, Princeton and Columbia will close out the series on Sunday with a single game at 12:30 p.m.
