Home Opener Set for Tuesday as Softball Team Hosts Rider for Pair

Tuesday will see the 2024 home opener for the Princeton softball team when the Tigers host Rider for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.

On Princeton: The Tigers, 10-9 overall, opened the Ivy League season over the weekend with Columbia taking two out of three in Manhattan. Sonia Zhang, the Ivy Co-Player of the Week, hit .667 (6-9) over the weekend to boost her season batting average to a team-best .380. Cassidy Shaw leads the Tigers in innings pitched at 50 1/3 with a 4.03 ERA. Julia Dumais stood 15th entering last weekend in walks per game at 0.81. Brielle Wright, who has thrown 20 2/3 innings, entered last weekend tied for fifth in the nation in saves, with four, was eighth in strikeout-to-walk ratio, then at 9.50 Ks per base on balls, and eighth in walks per seven, then with 0.75 walks per seven frames.Â
On Rider: The Broncs, 7-15 overall, split a non-conference doubleheader with St. Peter's last Friday with the win breaking a three-game skid. Jessie Niegocki is one of four Broncs hitting better than .300 on the season, at .357 while starting all 22 games. Three arms have each thrown between 23 2/3 and 35 innings on the season, with Niegocki at 23 2/3 with a 3.55 ERA and Anna-Marie Groskritz at 35 innings and a 4.20 ERA. Kathryn Schmierer has thrown 24 innings with a 4.67 ERA.
The Series: Princeton leads the all-time series with the Broncs 48-13-1 and swept a doubleheader in Lawrenceville last season after a Rider win and a tie, due to darkness, at Strubing Field in 2022.
Looking Ahead: Princeton will host Penn for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday in the team's Ivy League home opener.Â
