SAN DIEGO – The No. 8 Princeton Women's Water Polo Team used a hat trick from Kayla Yelensky to take down the No. 17 San Jose State Spartans, 9-7, at the Aztec Invitational.
Meera Burghardt and Yelenksy got the scoring started for the Tigers as they led 2-1 after eight minutes. Yelensky added her second of the contest to begin the second quarter before the two squads exchanged goals. Ally Lurie's tally with 49 seconds to go in the first half put Princeton ahead, 5-3, at halftime.
San Jose State began the second half with two tallies, tying the game at 5-all with 2:29 to go. Both teams scored once more, ending the third frame even at six.
After goals from the Spartans and Rachael Carver, Yelensky and Burghardt put the contest away with goals in the final three minutes.
It's Yelensky seventh hat trick of the season. Lindsey Lucas had eight saves in the win. Princeton finishes the Aztec Invite vs. No. 13 Indiana and No. 13 UC San Diego Sunday.
