Dumais' Clutch Hit, Wright's Record-Tying Save Complete Softball's Weekend Sweep
April 14, 2024 | Softball
Completing a weekend sweep of Dartmouth with a 3-2 win on Sunday at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field, the Princeton softball team finds itself in second place in the Ivy League heading into a battle for first place next weekend at league-leading Yale.
Â
Julia Dumais had the go-ahead RBI with two out in the bottom of the sixth to put Princeton in front and Brielle Wright got all three outs in the top of the seventh to earn her seventh save of the season, tying the Ivy League record for single-season saves.
Â
Â
Wright's save was also the eighth of the sophomore's career, putting her one back of the program record of nine, held by Riley Wilkinson '19, and two back of the Ivy League record of 10.
Â
Dartmouth opened the scoring in the top of the first after starting the game with three walks before Princeton and starter Meghan Harrington limited the damage by getting the next three Big Green batters with just a groundout picking up a run for a 1-0 Dartmouth lead.
Â
Princeton got the run back in the bottom of the first after a leadoff walk to Sonia Zhang, a Lauren Sablone single and an Allison Ha hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one out for Allie Goodwin to bring home the tying run with a sacrifice fly.
Â
Princeton took a 2-1 lead in the second after Cate Bade started the inning with a single and benefited from a two-base misplay in the outfield before Caitlin Bish followed with a base hit to bring home Bade.
Â
Dartmouth got the run back in the third inning after a leadoff walk and a double two batters later, and the 2-2 tie persisted until the sixth.Â
Â
With two runners on with walks and two out, Dumais dropped a 2-1 pitch down the left-field line to pick up Sonia Zhang and give Princeton the lead, and after a Dartmouth leadoff single in the seventh, Wright entered and retired the next three batters to seal the win.
Â
Molly Chambers picked up the win in relief of Harrington, going four shutout innings with three hits and a walk allowed.
Â
Princeton will host Monmouth on Wednesday in the Tigers' final non-league home game of the regular season before resuming the Ivy League slate in New Haven next weekend. Princeton will enter the Yale trip with an 8-4 Ivy record while the Bulldogs stand at 12-3 and having played one more weekend series of Ivy games than Princeton.
