The Tigers enter the weekend on a three-game win streak after sweeping Dartmouth at home over the weekend to improve to 19-11 overall and 8-4 in the Ivy League. Another win would get Princeton to 20 wins for the third consecutive season, with the team winning 27 games in 2022 and 29 games in 2023, the most in a single season since 2006 (34). Princeton last had three consecutive 20-win seasons from 2006-08.
Princeton stands second in a crowded top of the Ivy League at 8-4. Yale, this weekend's series opponent in New Haven, leads at 12-3, with Harvard third at 9-6 and Columbia fourth at 7-5. If the season ended with those teams in the top four, the Ivy League Tournament field would include the same four teams from the 2023 edition. Dartmouth (5-7) and Brown (5-7) are two games back of Columbia with Cornell (3-9) and Penn (2-10) rounding out the league. Harvard and Yale have two league weekends left to play with the other six teams have three.
Brielle Wright tied the Ivy single-season saves record with her seventh on Sunday against Dartmouth. Each of her next three saves would tie or surpass a league or program record. Her next save will break the Ivy single-season record and tie her for the Princeton career record, held by Riley Wilkinson '19, with nine. Her ninth save of the season, and the 10th of her career, would break the Princeton program career record and tie the Ivy career record held by a pair of Harvard arms in Rachel Brown (2009-12) and Katie Duncan (2016-19), and her 10th save of the season and 11th of her career would break the Ivy record.Â
Princeton stands second in the Ivy in batting average on the season overall, at .295, and fourth in ERA, at 4.42. Lauren Sablone's .419 batting average is third in the league, behind Harvard's Sophie Sun (.435) and Penn's Blake Landow (.429). Sonia Zhang leads the league in runs scored (29) while Sablone is second in hits (39), tied for first in triples (three), third in RBI (25) and second in total bases (62). Wright is third in the league in ERA (2.62) while Cassidy Shaw is second in the league in wins (eight).
Monmouth was picked 10th in the 12-team Coastal Athletic Association's preseason poll by vote of the league's coaches. Of the 29 players selected for the league's preseason watch list, two were from Monmouth in sophomore shortstop Mackenzie Bloss and junior pitcher Billie Kerwood. Monmouth stands eighth in the CAA at 6-11 and is 14-27 overall, coming off a sweep at Delaware. After the visit to Princeton, Monmouth will host Towson for three this weekend in a return to league play.Â
Princeton is 12-3 all-time against Monmouth with the last meeting a 7-5 Tiger win in West Long Branch in 2022. Monmouth won the meeting prior, also in West Long Branch, in 2019. This will be the teams' first meeting in Princeton since 2018, and the last time Princeton won at home against Monmouth was in 2016. Princeton also won the teams' 2017 meeting, in West Long Branch.
