No. 1 Heavies Travels To Take On No. 5 Yale and No. 14 Cornell Saturday
April 26, 2024 | Heavyweight Rowing
PRINCETON – The No. 1 Princeton Heavyweight Rowing Team heads to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on the No. 5 Yale Bulldogs and No. 14 Cornell Big Red.
The three Ivy foes will race on the Cayuga Inlet for the Carnegie Cup. The Bulldogs won the Carnegie Cup in 2023 on Lake Carnegie. Princeton won in 2022 after Yale's 1V cut to the inside of a turn buoy and was disqualified. Yale had won six straight cups from 2014-19.
"We've been having a good season so far and are excited to keep the momentum rolling into the weekend," said Keelan Good. "We've got some tough races ahead of us but we're confident we can get the job done. Yale and Cornell are a big test for us so it'll be a good indicator of where we stand and will let us know if our number one ranking holds merit."
The Tigers jumped to No. 1 in the IRCA Poll after taking down then-No. 1 Harvard last week on the Charles River. In a closely contested race, the 1V led throughout and eventually crossed the line at 5:51.7, just in front of the home Crimson (5:53.3).
It's only the fourth time since the Compton Cup started in 1933 that Princeton has won consecutive races against Harvard (1933-36, 1956-57, 2015-16, 2023-24). 2016 was also the last time the Tigers won on Charles River.
The 2V also took home a close victory by 2.5 seconds (5:58.0) over Harvard (6:00.5). The Crimson's 3V corralled a 6:01.7, just ahead of Princeton (6:03.9).
Princeton's 4V finished off the racing with a 6:22.7, 12.1 seconds in front.
Head coach Greg Hughes' 1V began the season with victories over No. 17 Drexel, No. 18 Georgetown and No. 23 Temple. The Tigers followed that with a decision over No. 17 Navy before wins over No. 9 Penn and No. 16 Columbia prior to last week's contest vs. Harvard.
Earlier this month, in Varese, Italy at the 2024 World Rowing Cup I, Tom George '18 won the 2- grand final while Fred Vystavel '16 was third. Jonas Juel '22 finished fifth in the 2X event. Juel and George will now race at the European Championships next week while Vystavel is preparing for the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in May.
Recently, Nick Mead '17 was named to the U.S. Rowing Olympic Team. He will race in either four or eight for the United States. He was recently named the 2023 US Rowing Athlete of the Year after helping the United States four to a silver medal at the 2023 World Rowing Championships, the best finish for a U.S. boat since 2017.
Sebastian Benzecry '20 helped Cambridge to a victory in the annual Oxford-Cambridge Boatrace by 3 ½ lengths last weekend. Jacob Intrater '23 lead the Cambridge lightweight eight to a win as well.
