Brown Takes Series Finale as Softball Team Remains in Front in Ivy Race
April 28, 2024 | Softball
Though the Princeton softball team had its chances on Sunday afternoon at Strubing Field, Brown held on for a 2-1 win to take the weekend series and add some intrigue to the final weekend of Ivy League play.
Princeton still stands atop the league at 12-6 with Harvard and Yale next, each at 14-7 with their Ivy seasons complete. At 11-7, Dartmouth has the inside track to the final Ivy League Tournament bid at 11-7, two games up on both Brown and Columbia, each 9-9, as the last two teams still mathematically alive for an Ivy tournament berth.
Princeton hosts Cornell next weekend at Strubing Field with a sweep delivering the outright Ivy title and Ivy tournament hosting duties to the Tigers. Two wins would also give Princeton a share of the Ivy title and hosting duties for the Ivy tournament because of Princeton's collective record against Harvard and Yale, or Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth.Â

Particularly early in Sunday's game, Princeton had opportunities to take control, leaving two runners on in the first, one each in the second and fifth, and the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings. Once those opportunities slipped, Brown pitcher Alexis Guevara closed the door, setting down the last seven Tigers between the fifth and seventh innings to prevent the rally.
Cassidy Shaw held the Bears to just a hit and a walk over the first three innings before Brown broke through in the fourth. A leadoff walk proved costly as Brown's Dara English doubled home the game's first run two batters after Jasmine Hsiao drew the free pass. Another leadoff walk scored in the fourth for the Bears, with Vanessa Alexander drawing that three batters before Brianna Rodriguez doubled Alexander home to make it 2-1 for Brown.
Princeton scored in the bottom of the fourth to tie it at 1-1 before Brown retook the lead. Grace Jackson drew a leadoff walk, came over on a Cate Bade sacrifice and scored on a Caitlin Bish base hit.
Guevara allowed six hits and five walks in the complete-game win, striking out three. Shaw went 4 1/3 for the Tigers in the circle, allowing the two runs on three hits and three walks, fanning four, while Molly Chambers went 1/3 of an inning and Brielle Wright threw the last 2 1/3, allowing two hits and a walk, striking out two.
Princeton will head to Lehigh on Tuesday for its final non-league game of the regular season before welcoming the Big Red next weekend.
