Baseball Makes A Quick Trip To Rutgers Wednesday

PRINCETON – The Princeton Baseball Team makes the trip to Piscataway to take on its in-state rival Rutgers on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
The Tigers are 16-21 this season and currently on a five-game winning streak. Princeton has victories over UNC Wilmington, Navy, Old Dominion, VCU, Cornell, Yale, Brown, Harvard, Penn, Wagner and Dartmouth. Princeton is second in the Ivy League at 11-7, trailing only Columbia (15-3). Cornell is 10-8 followed by Penn (9-9) and Yale (9-9).
Last week, Jake Koonin hit .538 and produced a .667 on-base percentage, adding four extra base hits, six RBI, five runs and three stolen bases. Matt Scannell corralled 16 total bases during that stretch, hitting .455. He contributed nine hits in the doubleheader vs. Dartmouth which is tied for the most hits in consecutive games in program history.
Koonin leads the team in hitting (.318), RBI (37), total bases (71), slugging percentage (.538) and stolen bases (10). Nick DiPietrantonio has hits in seven straight games and 19 of his last 20 contests which has raised his batting average from .196 to .299. He's tied with Kyle Vinci for the team lead in home runs (six). Vinci's home run on Saturday broke the program career record (27) set by Matthew Evans '99. Jake Bold paces the squad in walks (30) and on-base percentage (.430). The Tigers have five hitters hitting at least .275 (Koonin, DiPietrantonio, Bold (.298), Jake Kernodle (.286) and Caden Shapiro (.278)).
Jacob Faulkner has been an everything man for Princeton out of the bullpen, securing a 3.22 ERA in 18 appearances. He's 6-1, adding four saves with 42 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings. Will Sword has thrown at least six innings in each of his last three starts while Elliot Eaton struck out six in six frames at Dartmouth.
Rutgers is 24-19 overall and 3-12 in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights have wins over Winthrop, Old Dominion, St. Joseph's, Charleston Southern, Wagner, High Point, Delaware, Rider, Lafayette, UConn, NJIT, Michigan State, Seton Hall, Nebraska, Monmouth and St. John's. Rutgers has three players with an OPS over 1.000 in Josh Kuroda-Grauer (1.122), Tony Santa Maria (1.035) and Ty Doucette (1.032). Kuroda-Grauer is hitting .433 with 22 extra-base hits. Justin Sinibaldi is 4-2 with a 3.19 ERA in 73 1/3 innings.
