May 03, 2024 | Heavyweight Rowing
PRINCETON – The No. 1 Princeton Men's Heavyweight Team welcomes the No. 6 Brown Bears to Lake Carnegie on Saturday for the Content Cup.
These two have split the last four races against each other including a 3.2-second victory for Princeton last year. The Content Cup which honors Martha Content Joukowsky, Brown '58 was inaugurated in April of 1994 has been won by each University 14 times.
"The Heavies are now back at work on Carnegie preparing for the Content Cup vs Brown," said Princeton head coach Greg Hughes. "Brown has had a strong season in all boat classes and the racing will be fierce on all levels. The team is excited to line up on Saturday and we will be working hard to get ready for the racing ahead."
Last week, the Tigers took home the Carnegie Cup behind a course record on the Cayuga Inlet (5:26.6), defeating Yale and Cornell. The last time Princeton won in Ithaca was 2006.
Princeton's 2V also earned a win, crossing the line at 5:34.1, over five seconds in front of Yale (5:39.5). Cornell was third at 5:48.2.
The 1V has not lost this season, collecting wins vs. No. 1 Harvard, No. 5 Yale, No. 9 Penn, No. 14 Cornell No. 16 Columbia, No. 17 Drexel, No. 17 Navy, No. 18 Georgetown and No. 23 Temple.
Princeton's 1V has won four of its five race days by at least 5.0 seconds except for its victory over No. 1 Harvard (1.6 seconds). It's only the fourth time since the Compton Cup started in 1933 that Princeton has won consecutive races against Harvard (1933-36, 1956-57, 2015-16, 2023-24). 2016 was also the last time the Tigers won on Charles River.
Last week, Tom George '18 and Oliver Wynne-Griffith won the Men's Pair gold at the European Rowing Championships. That duo also won the gold at the World Rowing Cup I last month.
Recently, Nick Mead '17 was named to the U.S. Rowing Olympic Team. He will race in either four or eight for the United States. He was recently named the 2023 US Rowing Athlete of the Year after helping the United States four to a silver medal at the 2023 World Rowing Championships, the best finish for a U.S. boat since 2017.
