Penn State Rallies Past Princeton 3-2
September 15, 2024 | Field Hockey
Penn State rallied for two goals in the final 7:14, including the game-winner on a corner with 1:14 to play, to top 15th-ranked Princeton 3-2 Sunday afternoon in State College.
The loss evened Princeton's record at 2-2 on the season as the Tigers prepare for their Ivy League opener at Penn Friday.
Princeton, playing 41 hours after beating Miami (Ohio) in overtime Friday at home, jumped out quickly, scoring 2:45 into the game on a play set up by Beth Yeager, who ultimately redirected her saved shot to Talia Schenck, who knocked it in for her first of the year. Penn State's Sophia Gladieux, Yeager's USA Olympic teammate this summer in Paris, evened it with a reverse drive six minutes before halftime, and it appeared that 1-1 would be the score at the break.
Instead, freshman Molly Nye finished a fantastic individual play by dribbling into the circle, changing directions and ripping her own reverse shot into the cage with 15 seconds left in the quarter. Penn State challenged the goal on video review, but it would stand, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead at the half.
Gladieux, though, tied it once again with 7:14 left, and the Nittany Lions then won it when Sophia Mannino scored off the late corner.
