Kamryn Chaney Has Career-Best Day At UMBC/Howard Tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It had been 10 years since an Ivy League player had 34 kills in a match. Sophomore Kamryn Chaney of the Princeton University women's volleyball team did just that Saturday against High Point in the Tigers' second match of the UMBC/Howard Tournament.
Against the Panthers, Chaney recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a match and career-high 34 kills on a .484 hitting percentage along with a team-high 15 digs. The last Ivy player to accomplish that feat was Maddie Lord of the University of Pennsylvania, on Oct. 11, 2014, against Brown. Chaney followed that up with 22 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and three service aces as she notched her fifth double-double of 2024.
Senior Gracie Wood re-set her career-high assist total twice, first handing out 58 against High Point while recording her first career double-double with a career-best 11 assists. Against UMBC, Wood handed out 59 assists and had eight digs. Additionally, junior Ella Bunde re-set her career high in digs twice as she first had 14 against High Point then 15 against UMBC. Freshman Jackie Onyechi also tallied a match and career-high eight blocks against UMBC.
On the day, Chaney tallied 56 kills on a .308 hitting percentage along with 25 digs, five blocks and four service aces. Junior Valerie Nutakor also had an impressive Saturday as she tallied 29 kills on a .419 hitting percentage and five blocks while Wood accumulated 117 assists, 19 digs, three service aces and three blocks. Bunde's 29 digs were a team-high, while junior Lucia Scalamandre led the Tigers in blocks with eight.
Despite several individual standout performances, the Tigers fell to High Point, 3-2 (19-25, 26-24, 20-25, 25-19, 15-12) and UMBC, 3-2 (17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 24-26, 15-11).
Princeton vs. High Point
The Tigers got off to a strong start in the first set, with a kill by senior Mariah Haislip then consecutive Nutakor kills putting the Tigers up 4-1. While the Panthers responded with a 5-0 run, but another Nutakor kill sparked a 4-0 run that gave the Tigers a 10-8 advantage. While High Point would soon take an 11-10 lead, a Panther service error led a 5-0 Princeton run that put the Tigers in front, 15-10. From there, the Tigers held on to win the opening set with a score of 25-19.
Princeton raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second set, but High Point would eventually go on a 3-0 run and take a 12-9 lead. A Nutakor kill followed by a double block by Scalamandre and Chaney knotted the score at 16-16, but the Panthers were able to edge the Tigers, 26-24, leveling the match at 1-1.
The third set was played to a stalemate at 9-9, but a kill by Scalamandre ignited a 5-0 run that put the Tiger ahead, 14-9. The Panthers were able to bring the deficit back down to one at 16-15 but kills by senior Shelby Fulton and Chaney made it 18-15. Princeton would lead by no less than three and go on to earn a 25-20 third set victory.
Chaney opened the fourth set with consecutive kills, as Princeton got off on the right foot and led 10-8. High Point responded with a pair of 5-0 runs, surging ahead 18-11 then going on to force a decisive fifth set, winning the fourth 25-19.
The Tigers were on the back foot early in the fifth as High Point took a 9-3 lead. Princeton refused to quit and would chip away, with a Chaney kill followed by a Scalamandre service ace reducing the margin to 13-10. The Tigers were able to save two match points, but High Point would earn the 15-12 victory in the set and the 3-2 win in the match.
Princeton vs. UMBC
The opening set began as a back-and-forth battle until a Chaney kill ignited a 5-0 run that put Princeton up, 10-7. Kills from Scalamandre, Chaney and Onyechi saw the Tigers take a five-point lead, 13-8, and from there Princeton maintained the momentum to prevail, 25-17.
A kill by Chaney led an early 4-0 Princeton run that gave the Tigers a 4-2 advantage in the second set, but UMBC responded with a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. The Retrievers used a pair of 3-0 runs to swing things their way and get ahead, 13-7. Despite a late 3-0 Princeton run, UMBC would level the match at 1-1 and win the second set, 25-18.
A pair of kills by Onyechi along with a Chaney service ace got Princeton off to a strong start in the third, as the Tigers took a 3-1 lead. The Tigers continues their strong play, with an Onyechi kill leading a 3-1 run that Princeton ahead, 11-7. UMBC would gradually chip away at the Tigers' advantage, eventually tying the score at 17-17 then taking the lead at 19-18. The set ended as a back-and-forth battle, but it was the Retrievers who would earn the 25-23 victory.
UMBC jumped out to a 5-1 advantage and would later use a 5-0 run to take a 15-19 lead. A kill by Chaney sparked a 4-0 run that brought it within two, 16-14, then a Fulton kill led a 3-0 run tied the score at 17-17. A kill by Onyechi ignited a 3-0 run that put Princeton in front, 20-18, but UMBC bounced back and took match point at 24-23. A Chaney kill sparked a 3-0 run on which Tigers would close the set out, prevailing 26-24 and sending the match five.
The Retrievers took a 4-2 advantage early in the fifth set and did not look back from there. A UMBC error then a Chaney kill brought it within three at 10-7, but it was the Retrievers who would ultimately prevail, 15-11 in the set and 3-2 in the match.
