Women's Volleyball Drops Ivy Opener To Penn
September 27, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team opened Ivy League play inside Dillon Gymnasium Friday night, falling to the University of Pennsylvania in its home opener, 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21).
Sophomore Kamryn Chaney led the Tigers in kills with 14 and added 10 digs along with two service aces. The double-double was Chaney's third-straight and fifth of the season. Junior Lucia Scalamandre finished with 13 kills and four blocks, tying the team-high in that category with senior Shelby Fulton. Sophomore Sydney Draper recorded a match-high 45 assists and two service aces, while junior Ella Bunde led the team in digs with 15, which also tied the match-high.
The Tigers got off to an impressive start, with a kill by Chaney igniting a 5-0 run that put Princeton in front, 8-2, after a Draper service ace. The momentum stayed with the Tigers throughout the set, with kills by Scalamandre and Chaney putting Princeton ahead, 16-8. Set point came courtesy of a freshman Sylvia Bunde service ace as the Tigers took the opening set, 25-17.
Penn took the upper hand early in the second set, going up 7-5. A 3-0 Princeton run led by a freshman Jackie Onyechi kill gave the Tigers a 10-9 advantage, but Penn responded with a pair of 3-0 runs to take a 16-13 lead. Princeton was unable to rally late, as the Quakers held on for the 25-20 second set victory.
The Quakers raced out to an 8-3 lead in the third set and did not look back from there. The Tigers attempted to rally; with Penn up 13-7 a kill by sophomore Ava Harrington sparked a 4-0 run that made it 13-11, but that would be as close as the Tigers would get as the Quakers would pull away and prevail 25-18.
The fourth began as a 9-9 stalemate, but a pair of Chaney kills followed by a Draper kill gave the Tigers a three-point advantage at 12-9. Shortly after, the Quakers would use a 4-0 run and tie it up at 15-15. With the score knotted at 17-17, a 3-0 Penn run put the Quakers ahead, 20-17. Princeton could not pull off the comeback, falling in the fourth set, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.
