Women's Volleyball Earns 3-1 Victory Over Penn

PHILADELPHIA – For the fifth time in her career and the fourth time this season, sophomore Kamryn Chaney exceeded 20 kills as she led the Princeton University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-21, 25-12) victory over the University of Pennsylvania inside Rockwell Gymnasium Saturday night.
The match was scheduled to be played in the Palestra but was moved to Rockwell Gymnasium due to extreme humidity.
The victory moved Head Coach Sabrina King to 196 in her career, just four away from 200.
Chaney led the match with 24 kills on a .348 hitting percentage while adding four digs and two service aces. Senior Shelby Fulton finished with 11 kills on a .588 hitting percentage and three blocks, while sophomore Sydney Draper recorded a match-high 48 assists, a match and career-high five blocks, a match-high three service aces and nine digs. Draper shared the match-high in blocks with junior Lucia Scalamandre, who also had five. Junior Ella Bunde tallied a match-high 14 digs.
Sparked by a freshman Jackie Onyechi kill, the Tigers used an early 6-0 run to surge ahead in the first set, 6-2. The Quakers would battle back to take the lead at 9-8, then extend it out to 19-14. A kill by Scalamandre led a 5-0 run that narrowed the deficit to one at 21-20, then Princeton would eventually take set point at 24-22. However, it was the Quakers who would prevail in the first set with a score of 26-24.
Penn raced out to a 9-6 advantage in the second set, but a kill by junior Valerie Nutakor led a 5-0 run that saw the Tigers jump ahead, 11-9. Determined not to let the Tigers back into the match, Penn responded and took command of the set once more, this time leading 21-19. A kill by Chaney followed by a Draper service ace and a Fulton kill put the Tigers back in front, 22-21, and Princeton would pull away to earn a 25-23 second set victory.
With assistance from an early 5-0 run that featured a pair of Chaney kills along with a trio of Quaker errors, that Tigers took a 10-5 lead in the third set. Penn was able to keep it close, eventually making it a two-point set at 21-19, but a Quaker error followed by a Chaney kill saw the Tigers go up, 23-19. With the Tigers ahead 24-21, Nutakor put down a kill to give Princeton a 25-21 victory in the third set along with a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The fourth set was all Tigers. A kill by Fulton sparked a 5-0 run that gave Princeton a 9-3 lead, then a Chaney kill led a 6-1 run that gave the Tigers a double figure lead, 15-5. The Tigers had one more run in them, as a double block by Fulton and Onyechi led a 4-0 run that put Princeton ahead, 21-8. The Tigers held on and prevailed in the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-1. Match point came on an incredible double block by Scalamandre and Draper.
