Yeager's Goal Gives Princeton 1-0 Win At Columbia
September 27, 2024 | Field Hockey
Columbia field hockey goalie Katie Wimmer did what she does — steal goals from the opponent. Princeton's Beth Yeager does what she does — not care about that.
After being robbed twice by Wimmer earlier and another time on a defensive save off a penalty corner, Yeager cashed in on the only goal of the night in the first minute of the fourth quarter, giving the Tigers a 1-0 win over the stubborn Lions in New York City.
The win improved the Tigers to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League, while Columbia fell to 2-4 and 1-1 after beating Cornell last week in its Ivy opener. Next up for Princeton will be a Sunday matchup at noon on Bedford Field against No. 2 Northwestern.
Yeager and Wimmer are the reigning Ivy League Players of the Week, and they showed why Friday night. The Columbia senior kept her team in the game for as long as she could, especially when she stopped two drives by Yeager, one on a corner and one on a long run as she dribbled into the circle and let a shot fly, both of which looked for all the world like they were headed into the cage.
The only score came after a drive in the circle found its way to Yeager, who tucked it into the goal just 20 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Princeton now leads the all-time series with Columbia 26-1.

Princeton dominated possession, outshooting Columbia 13-2 and putting seven shots on goal to none for the home team. The Princeton defense, led by Clem Houlden, Gracie McGowan and Ottilie Sykes, kept the ball away from Tiger goalie Robyn Thompson, who did not have to make a save. And just like that, it's 1-0 Tigers. The goal scorer? Beth Yeager, with her fifth of the year. pic.twitter.com/W1gFVk7h3K
