Chea's Heroics Leads Women's Basketball Over Harvard, 52-50
January 11, 2025 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON – Ashley Chea's buzzer beater gave the Princeton Women's Basketball Team a 52-50 victory over the Harvard Crimson at Jadwin Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Her buzzer beater is just the program's second in 22 years, joining Grace Stone vs. Rhode Island in December of 2022.
After Harvard's Elena Rodriguez's bucket put the road team in front, 50-48, with 2:10 to go, Skye Belker was fouled and sank two free throws the next trip down the floor.
On the next possession, Parker Hill stole the ball, but a missed shot led to a Harvard opportunity. Despite two offensive rebounds, Harvard could not find the hoop.
Following a defensive carom from Fadima Tall, Belker's mid-range jumper missed, but she grabbed the offensive rebound. After Tall's miss, Harvard had one more chance with 23 seconds to go.
Hill blocked Rodriguez's shot and collected the ball which allowed head coach Carla Berube to call timeout and draw up Chea's game-winner.
Olivia Hutcherson and Belker led the Tigers with 10 points each. Hutcherson set a new career high in the victory, adding four rebounds. Princeton held Harvard to its lowest point total of the season. Rodriguez led all scorers with 22 points on 11-of-18 shooting while the home team held Harmoni Turner to 15 points on 18 shots.
The game featured seven ties and five lead changes.
Harvard opened the game with the first six points, but Princeton quickly countered to tie the game. Belker's jumper gave the Tigers a 15-14 lead after 10 minutes.
After the Crimson started the scoring in the second stanza, the Tigers ripped off eight straight, forcing a timeout. Berube's squad led 25-18 at the break. Princeton gave up just two baskets in the second quarter.
Princeton led by double-digits to begin the second half, but Harvard closed the gap to four, 30-26, with 5:54 left. The Tigers answered with buckets from Chea and Belker and eventually took a 39-34 advantage into the final frame.
The Tigers improve to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League while Harvard's 10-game winning streak came to an end. The Crimson fell to 12-2 and 1-1 in the conference.
