PITTSBURGH, PA. – In a performance highlighted by five Tiger wins, the Princeton wrestling team dropped a close contest late to #19 Pitt on the road Friday.
Despite leading for a majority of the match from big performances by Kole Mulhauser and first-years Matthew Martino and Gavin Hawk, West Virginia got a pin in the 285 bout to take the victory.
How It Happened
Marc-Anthony McGowan set the tone as he entered the mat, earning two back points and a takedown early in his bout with Tyler Chappell. Continuing to score, McGowan got a last second takedown to push the result to a major, putting the Tigers on the board 4-0.
First-year Martino made some noise with his collegiate dual debut against #32 Briar Priest, earning a win over a ranked opponent. With the second period about to expire 2-0, Martino added to his two point-lead with a big takedown to make it 5-0.
Priest was able to get some points back in the third period, but Martino's takedown stood the difference as he took the 6-5 decision and put the Tigers up,
After Eligh Rivera dropped a decision in extra time to #19 Kade Brown, the another '29 Tiger took the mat in Hawk at 157.
Hawk, finding himself down 4-2 in the third period, was relentless as he searched for a takedown. Working through a scramble and gaining control, Hawk found the three points he needed to take the decision, 5-4.
#17 Ty Whalen exploded as he got onto the mat for the 165 bout, racing to a 7-0 lead in the first period. Continuing to battle it out as no. 23 Dylan Evans earned some points, Whalen managed to get a big 8-5 decision to bring the Tiger lead to 13-6.
Giles dropped a close bout with Luca Augustine, before Mulhauser took to the mat.
Down 3-1 towards the end of the first period after letting up an early takedown, Mulhauser gained control as he scrambled with Pitt's Chase Kranitz. Ending up on top with Kranitz on his back, Mulhauser forced the pin to earn a huge six points for the Tigers.
First-year Conor McCloskey dropped his contest to 2025 All-American Mac Stout, 19-4, while defending well at the end of the bout to prevent a fall.
Still holding on to a five-point lead going into the final match, it looked as though the Tigers would be able to open the season with a ranked win. But, Pitt, strong in the heavyweights, was able to come back and win the dual with a fall by Dayton Pitzer over Sebastian Garibaldi, 20-19.
