Wrestlers Split Mountaineer Sunday in West Virginia
November 16, 2025 | Wrestling
Sunday saw a split for the Princeton wrestling team as the Tigers took on a pair of Mountaineers, getting a 24-9 win over Appalachian State before a 25-9 loss against host No. 22 West Virginia.
Princeton will return to the mat next Sunday with a visit from Northwestern in Jadwin Gym.
In the win over Appalachian State, Princeton started with four straight victories, for No. 18-ranked Marc-Anthony McGowan (125), Ethan Rivera (133), Jacob Mann (141) and Eligh Rivera (149).
McGowan had three first-period takedowns on the way to five total takedowns and a four-point near-fall against Cooper Foster to win his match in a 19-4 tech fall in two periods.
Ethan Rivera had a first-period takedown and held on after opponent Jarvis Little scored a second-period reversal, with Rivera adding a point on a third-period escape and Little on a third-period penalty point in Rivera's 4-3 win.
Mann had takedowns in the first and third period on the way to an 8-0 win over Aldo Hernandez, adding an escape and the riding-time point to get the bonus.
Eligh Rivera bounced back from opponent Kaden Keiser getting a first-period takedown with two of his own in the second period on the way to an 8-5 win to close out the meet-opening string of victories.
Appalachian State got on the board with a 4-1 win at 157 for Jeremiah Price over Rocco Camillaci on a decisive third-period takedown.
Princeton put together another string of wins with three straight from No. 19 Ty Whalen (165), Xavier Giles (174), and No. 17 Kole Mulhauser (184).
Whalen used a pair of first-period takedowns and another in the second on the way to a 13-2 major-decision win over Anthony Conetta, while Giles had a first-period takedown and led the rest of the way in a 5-4 win over Colt Campbell. In a matchup of ranked wrestlers, Mulhauser got the better of No. 31 Tomas Brooker, getting a takedown and a four-point near-fall in the first period to build a lead on the way to a 13-8 win and a 24-3 lead for the team.
Appalachian State won both of the final two matches, with Logan Eller going a point at a time between the last two periods in a 4-0 win over Conor McCloskey at 197 and Stephan Monchery using an overtime takedown to win 5-2.
Against WVU, wins in each of the last four matches allowed the home team to pull away.
The match started with a top-20 pairing in which a second-period escape was the only point, with No. 6-ranked Jett Strickenberger defeating No. 18-ranked McGowan 1-0.
Princeton responded with wins in each of the next two matches, from Ethan Rivera at 133 and Jacob Mann at 141.
Ethan Rivera's third-overtime escape was enough to get a 2-1 win over Gunnar Andrick, and Jacob Mann had a win over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 30 Jordan Titus 7-2 and pulling away on a third-period takedown and a four-point near-fall at the buzzer.
WVU had a 9-2, TB-1 win for No. 17 Willie McDougald over Matthew Martino at 149, using a pair of overtime takedowns to pull away and tie the match at 6-6.
No. 2-ranked Ty Watters picked up a bonus-point win over Gavin Hawk, 18-4 at 157, to give WVU a 10-6 lead, and though Princeton won the next match, with No. 19 Whalen getting an 8-5 win over Shawn Taylor at 165, WVU led the rest of the way. Whalen had a takedown in each of the first two periods to respond to an early takedown by Taylor and get the win.
At 174, No. 21 Brody Conley was an 18-2 winner over Xavier Giles to put WVU up 15-9 on a second-period tech-fall win. At 184, No. 23 Ian Bush defeated No. 17 Mulhauser 8-5. With each wrestler getting a takedown in the second and a reversal in the third, riding time and a pair of second-period escapes were the difference there.
At 197, No. 22 Rune Lawrence was a 17-5 major-decision winner over McCloskey, and at heavyweight, Brock Kehler scored all five points in the third period, on a takedown and an escape to go with the riding-time point, to defeat Garibaldi and wrap the match.
