Tigers Boast Five Placewinners at Princeton Open
November 02, 2025 | Wrestling
PRINCETON, N.J. – Boasting five placewinners, the Princeton wrestling team opened the 2025-26 season by hosting the Princeton Open on Sunday in Jadwin Gym.
Marc-Anthony McGowan and Ty Whalen finished second in their respective weight classes, while Drew Heethuis and first-year Gavin Hawk each claimed fourth. Sebastian Garibaldi rounded out the Tiger placewinners with a sixth-place finish.
How It Happened
Whalen went 4-1 on the day, earning two tech falls and two major decisions on his way to the 165 finals. In the semifinal round, he earned the 16-0 tech over Rider's Brendon Abdon in just 1:19. In the first round, he got the 19-2 tech over Jake Wacha in 3:14.
In the final, though, despite some good looks late in the match, #19 Whalen fell to #14 Gunner Filipowicz of West Point, 5-2.
#18 McGowan also dominated his first three matches of the day, picking up a tech fall and two majors. In the semifinal, he earned the major decision over #26 Tyler Klinsky, 14-2. Falling just short in the final, McGowan dropped a 3-0 decision to Oregon State's #16 Maximo Rentaria.
First-year Hawk, making his collegiate debut on the mat, went 3-2 on the day. His first match as a Tiger saw him pin Rob Connelley in just 2:08. He went on to get two more decisions, including one over Ivy rival Dominic Frontino of Brown, before falling into the consolation bracket with a 4-1 loss to West Point's Joe Antonio.
Heethuis, at 133, also looked strong on the day as he picked up a tech fall in his first match over Marius Garcia. He went on to pick up a major in the next round, before battling out an extra-time win over Columbia's Evin Gursoy. Sending it to OT with an escape to tie it at 3-3, Heethuis got a clutch takedown to advance to the next round.
After falling in the first round, Garibaldi worked his way back in consolation as he earned a tech fall over Drexel's Shane Whitney in 4:31. He went on to get a decision over Steyn De Lange and a 14-1 major over Charlie Tibbitts to make it to the fifth-place match.
Officially starting the season in a bustling Jadwin Gym, the Tigers looked strong as a team - boasting placewinners in five of the nine classes they competed in today.
