Tigers Drop Friday Doubleheader
February 28, 2025 | Baseball
In game one of the doubleheader the Tigers fell to Maryland, despite some early fireworks from Jake Koonin in his return to Winston-Salem, N.C.
In game two, Sean Episcope took center stage with one of the best starts of his career on the mound. Episcope, Justin Kim and Jacob Faulkner combined for 13 strikeouts but could not pull off the upset against the No. 12 Demon Deacons.
Game One
Jake Koonin started his return to his home town with a bang. Koonin lifted the fourth pitch of the game over the center field fence to give Princeton the early 1-0 lead.
James Beasley faced one batter more than the minimum in the first before retiring the side in the opening frame.
Maryland would answer a clean frame of their own with ten runs in the second inning.
The Terrapins would continue to put on runs in the sixth inning after Kaden Kram entered the game and silenced the Maryland offense.
With an 11-1 lead, Maryland would add a trio of runs in the seventh inning followed by another three in the eighth to finish the game 17-1.
Game Two
Despite the loss earlier in the day, the Tigers were not deterred by #12 Wake Forest. After another Koonin leadoff extra-base hit, Caden Shapiro singled to center, and put Princeton on the board first.
Wake Forest responded with a solo home run in the first to tie the score before Episcope settled in.
The potent Demon Deacon offense was unable to otherwise get things going as batter after batter was sent back to the dugout.
Episcope tossed five innings and recorded a new career high nine strikeouts and allowed just two hits before Kim came in for relief.
With two runners on in the bottom of the sixth, Kim dialed it in to force the swinging strikeout to close out the side.
Wake Forest had a runner on first thanks to a throwing error to start the seventh. A single advanced the runner to second before coming home to score on a base hit.
The Demon Deacons added one more in the inning to make it a 3-1 game and go on to be the final score as Princeton went down in order the next two frames.
The Tigers will return to David F. Couch Ballpark for a rematch against the Maryland Terrapins at 12:00 PM on Saturday.
