Softball Team Takes Texas Finale Over George Washington
March 01, 2025 | Softball
The offense came to life in a 10-5 win for the Princeton softball team over George Washington on Saturday at Texas A&M after Princeton saw Idaho State rally to take the first game of the day 5-3.
With the trip to Texas in the books, the Tigers will begin their spring trip to California and Missouri next weekend with a March 9 doubleheader at San José State.
Idaho State 5, Princeton 3
Princeton got home runs from Sonia Zhang in the fourth inning and Allison Ha in the fifth, but a four-run sixth-inning rally lifted Idaho State past the Tigers, 5-3.
Idaho State opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when a double and an error two batters later pushed a run across, but Princeton tied it up in the bottom half of the inning when a Ha two-out ground ball picked up Lauren Sablone, who had a one-out base hit three batters before.
The Tiger lead grew to 3-1 on the Zhang and Ha homers, but the sixth inning proved to be the difference for the Bengals, who got a homer and two doubles from the inning's firs three batters to pull even at 3-3. A pair of walks, a double steal and an RBI single plated two more runs for a 5-3 ISU lead.
Idaho State held on from there with Kasey Aguinaga getting the win in relief, retiring eight of the nine batters she faced in 2 2/3 shutout innings around a seventh-inning two-out walk to Sophia Marsalo.Â
Princeton 10, George Washington 5
Princeton jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead after Karis Ford singled home a Sonia Zhang double, Lauren Sablone doubled home pinch runner Julieta Roa, and Allison Ha singled home Sablone. The lead grew to 7-0 in the third when Sablone capitalized on Ford being walked and Abby Hornberger being hit by a pitch to double both home. Graciela Dominguez tripled home Sablone and Sophia Marsalo had a mishandled fly ball to shallow left that dropped and scored Dominguez for the 7-0 lead.
Zhang homered for the second time on the day in the fourth inning, following Julia Dumais being hit by a pitch by crushing one off the scoreboard in left field to push the Tiger lead to 9-0.
Though Shaw set down the first nine batters she faced, George Washington broke through in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on three hits and two walks to make it 9-2.
The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, with Princeton pushing it back into run-rule territory with an Allie Goodwin solo homer before a two-out GW rally on an error and two hits pushed across a run to extend the game and make it 10-3.
George Washington used a leadoff hit and a homer two batters later to score twice in the seventh, but the Revolutionaries got no more as Princeton closed out the 10-5 win.
Shaw went 3 2/3 innings before handing the ball to Brielle Wright, who got the win in 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing an unearned run on two hits. Hollenkamp closed it out in the seventh.
