Baseball Picks Up The Win In Shootout With William & Mary
March 11, 2025 | Baseball
Jake Koonin led off the game with a single on a full count followed by two outs for Princeton. Ready to get things going, Koonin swiped second before Kernodle joined him on the basepaths via a walk. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. A passed ball by the William & Mary catcher allowed Koonin to come in to score and put Kernodle on third. Nick Shenefelt slapped a hit to right to plate the second run of the frame.
The Tribe responded with a leadoff homer off Shenefelt and added another run to make it a 2-2 game.
A bases loaded walk bounced the starting pitcher for the Tribe, but Shenefelt kept up the pace with his second hit in as many plate appearances. The base hit brought two runs in for the Tigers for a three RBI day.
William & Mary took the lead on a double and a three-run home run in the second.
Jordan Kelly scored on an error to tie the game yet again, but the Tribe added a tally to its score in both the third and fourth frame.
Koonin, again serving as a catalyst for the Tigers delivered. With two runners on, the junior homered on the first pitch he saw to take back the lead for Princeton.
Justin Kim worked two scoreless innings and allowed just two hits to keep the Tribe at bay.
With the Tigers up one, Jacob Faulkner came in for relief in the bottom of the eighth. A walk and wild pitch put the tying run for William & Mary in scoring position who was brought home thanks to back-to-back singles to make it 9-9 heading into the ninth frame.
Looking to avoid extra innings, Grant Werdesheim got the rally going with a bunt single to reach first. Koonin walked and Caden Shapiro bunted as well to juice the bases. The most efficient hitter in Jake Bold stepped up to the plate, but a run came in when he was hit by the pitch. A passed ball would plate a second run before a bases loaded walk pushed the score to 12-9.
William & Mary put on its own rally cap with a two-run blast to cut the lead to one, but the spark was snuffed with the final out of the ballgame.
Koonin and Shenefelt combined for six of Princeton's nine RBI with three apiece. Eight of ten batters recorded at least one hit in the win with Werdesheim and Koonin each tallying three.
Jacob Faulkner got the win in the matchup and moved up to a tie for second in program history for consecutive wins with nine.
The Tigers will face the Tribe for the second game of the series tomorrow, Mar. 12, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 PM.
