March 14, 2025 | Baseball
LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Princeton University baseball team started its four game weekend series with the Liberty Flames on Friday afternoon. After holding the lead going into the eighth, the Flames were able to rally and defeat the Tigers by a score of 6-4.
The Flames were able to get on the board in the top of the first on an unearned run.
Princeton responded in the top of the second with a two-out rally. Kevin Blowers created a spark with a single followed by a RBI double from Jordan Kelly to knot things up at one a piece. Tommy Googins slapped a base knock to send Kelly home and bump the score to 2-1.
Sean Episcope settled in after going deep in the at-bats in the first inning. The sophomore retired eight straight batters, striking out five of them.
Justin Kim took over for Episcope in the top of the sixth as the Tigers maintained their one-run lead. Kim got off to a quick start, striking out the side to get Princeton back on offense with momentum in its favor.
Grant Werdesheim played some small ball with a bunt to give the Tigers a base runner and bring Jake Koonin to the plate. Koonin launched a triple to center field, plating a run for Princeton. Looking to add to the lead, Koonin led off the third base bag and sprinted home on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 in favor of the Tigers.
Liberty got one run back in the bottom of the frame to cut Princeton's advantage to two-runs.
Jacob Faulkner came in for relief in the eighth and the Flames took advantage of the pitcher out of the bullpen. Liberty scored four runs in the inning and held off Princeton to complete its comeback.
Princeton will face Liberty on Saturday for a doubleheader with the games starting at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
